Restaurants

· Postrio – One of the flagships of articulate German cuisine. Good but pricy. Founded by star-cook Wolfgang Puck.

· Suppenkueche – Serving mainly (heavy) German and Austrian dishes of excellent quality. 525 Laguna, San Francisco.

· Walzwerk – East-german nostalgy lives up in the restaurant "Walzwerk" that serves and propagates dishes from the east.

· Alpine Inn, Burlingame – Not only the dishes are of first rank, but also the owners Hedy und Werner are very nice people. They also offer a good selection of beers: Franziskaner, Spaten, und Bitburger. The prices are moderate. Main dish plus soup and salad for 16-20$. The Alpine Inn is situated only one block away from Burlingame Ave: 401 Primrose Street, (650) 347-5733.

· Schroeder's – The food is slightly reminiscent of a German highway restaurant, however they do offer Franziskaner Weissbier vom Fass and authentic Bavarian waitresses. 240 Front Street in the Financial District, San Francisco, Telephone: (415) 421-4778.

Specialty Food Stores

· Milk Pail – Independent supermarket with food from Europe and the Mediterranean. A bit chaotic, a bit pricy at times, but unique.

· Trader Joe's – Quality food at comparatively low prices. The limited selection does include products from Europe and Germany. This supermarkt chain is owned by ALDI, but offers a non-ALDI experience.
