Announcement and discussion list
To subscribe to the Stanford German Student Association list and receive
updates about news and events send a mail to
majordomo@lists.Stanford.EDU.
The text of the message should read:
subscribe german-association
You can leave the subject blank. If you use the link above the body will be filled in for you automatically.
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can
send a mail to
majordomo@lists.Stanford.EDU
with the following command in the body of your e-mail message:
unsubscribe german-association
This list is open for general posting from its members. However, we
do ask that only messages are sent to this list which are of relevance
to its members. Please when replying to a message received through this
list consider replying to the sender only and not to the entire list,
especially when the reply is of personal nature and does not contribute
additional or new content. Messages you receive through this list are prefixed by "[sgsa]".
Announcement list: Events only
If you would like to receive the officical announcements of the
Stanford German Student Association only please send a mail to
majordomo@lists.Stanford.EDU.
In this case, the text of the message should read:
subscribe german-association-events-only
You can leave the subject blank. If you use the link above the body will be filled in for you automatically.
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can
send a mail to
majordomo@lists.Stanford.EDU
with the following command in the body of your e-mail message:
unsubscribe german-association-events-only
This second list is closed for general posting to keep the number of
messages sent to the list small. When you subscribed to first list there
is no need to also subscribe to the events-only list as the information
of the latter list will be redundant. Messages received through this list are prefixed by "[sgsa-events-only]".
Commercial Postings
While we in general encourage individuals to make announcements
relevant to our community by means of directly posting to our mailing
list, please note that the Stanford German Student Association excludes
companies from posting directly to this mailing list. If you are a
company representative and wish to make use of our mailing list please
contact a member of our board.
Newsgroup
Since summer 1999 there is also a newsgroup in the su.* hierarchy
which can be used to discuss anything relating to Germans at Stanford.
The name of the newsgroup is
su.org.german.
All su.* groups are only available within the Stanford environment.
Newsgroup or Mailing List?
If you post a message to the mailing list, it will be sent to the mailboxes
of all subscribers - whether they are interested in the topic
or not. By contrast, the subscribers of the newsgroup download your message
actively. Since many people do not like their personal mailboxes flooded
with mails expressing private opinions about "arbitrary" topics, we recommend
to consider whether everybody on the mailing list will be interested in
your message. If in doubt, use the newsgroup, not the mailing list.
You will get strong opposition if you start private debates on the mailing
list whereas this is welcome in the newsgroup. Messages of a strictly
commercial
nature are unwanted in both the mailing list and the newsgroup.
Sending a Message to the Newsgroup without Subscription
You can post a message to the newsgroup without being subscribed by sending
your message as e-mail to a mail2news gateway:
su.org.german@news.stanford.edu
This may be of particular interest for one-time users, however it is
recommended that one reads a newsgroup if one posts to that newsgroup
(newsgroups are not write-only).
Newsserver
If you are not able to subscribe to su.org.german, check whether
nntp.stanford.edu is your newsserver (in Netscape this is defined
under Preferences - Mail & Newsgroups).
