Programs and Research
Clayman Institute's programs and research focus on women and gender in science, engineering, technology, mathematics, and business.
Our research includes several innovative in-house studies as well as periodic conferences and think tanks. We create practical recommendations, rooted in rigorous empirical research, in order to assist employers recruit and retain highly qualified people, especially women. These studies will inform policy discussions at the highest level in universities, industry, and government. We believe that the tools of gender analysis, when turned to science, medicine, engineering, and technology, can profoundly alter human knowledge.

Research Studies
We are currently running three inter-related studies:
- Dual-Career Academic Couples Study
- Climbing the Technical Ladder: Obstacles and Solutions for Mid-Level Women in Technology
- Women Entrepreneurs Project
Why do comparatively few women start high-tech companies or participate in the entrepreneurial teams directing start-ups? This study seeks to encourage a better representation of women at senior levels in venture-backed technology firms. Report to be published in Summer 2009.

This two-day meeting focused on specific ways in which gender analysis has brought spark and creativity to particular fields of science. - Making use of Title IX
In April 2006, the Clayman Institute hosted a closed-door two day think tank on the application of Title IX to science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM). - "Out of the Chrysalis"
We are collaborating with Flare Films on a documentary about Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), who is the first woman who voyaged for her science. This documentary will receive its' Bay Area premier at Reunion Homecoming in October 2008.
