Dr. Michelle Cale

Michelle CaleMichelle Cale read Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford University, UK. She went on to do research into reformatory and industrial schools for girls in Victorian England, and received her D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1993. After two years as a curator for the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts in London, Michelle became a policy advisor in the Ministry of Justice, focusing particularly on legal aid and family law issues. She was principal speechwriter for the Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine of Lairg, and his lead policy advisor on new legislation enabling divorcing couples to share pensions as part of a clean break settlement. She also directed a major policy initiative to strengthen the rights of adults with limited mental capacity, which recently became law in the UK. Michelle has been part of the Institute since August 2005.

As Associate Director, Michelle is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Institute, including finance, staff and planning. She is also responsible for community relations, publicity and marketing, and program development.

In her spare time, Michelle is an avid Scottish Country Dancer and admits to be a fan of the Harry Potter novels. She has voluntary leadership positions with the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society, San Francisco Branch; and is also a volunteer leader at Keys School in Palo Alto.
