Faculty Research Fellowships: Program Description
About the Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Clayman Institute creates knowledge and seeks to implement change that promotes gender equality at Stanford, nationally, and internationally. Our community of Faculty Research Fellows, Faculty Affiliates, Senior Scholars, and Graduate Dissertation Fellows contribute to the knowledge creation. To increase our reach and impact, we are launching a Gender News Service which will promote the gender research to catalysts who can influence change. The postdoctoral scholar will help to shape the public outreach of the Clayman Institute and our affiliated scholars. He or she will write regular articles for the News Service covering research, interviewing faculty, and following conferences. One position is available in 2010-2011.
Fellowship designations are based on the applicant's status on September 1 of the year of application. Former fellows in all categories and Stanford faculty who have won other Clayman Institute awards are not eligible for an award until three years have passed.
Applicants are required to submit:
Only complete applications will be considered; other supporting papers will not be reviewed. Applications and letters of recommendation are accepted by email only. Ask referees to put your name in the "Subject" field. No printed applications or letters will be accepted. Email all documents to gender-applications@stanford.edu.
Deadline: November 16, 2009, 5:00pm PST.
Notification: Fellowship awards will be announced in April 2010.
Former fellows and Stanford faculty who have won other Clayman Institute awards are not eligible for another award until three years have passed.
Applications are considered on their individual merits. The Institute is committed to equality of opportunity, and fair and open competition.
Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project, on an applicant's record of achievement and promise, and on the applicant's potential for contributing to the Institute's broader research program.
Each application is reviewed in a two-tiered process. Applications are evaluated by a cross-disciplinary panel of Clayman Institute Affiliated Faculty. The Director and Associate Director, in consultation with the Program Manager, determine the final fellowship group based on a combination of funding and the creation of a coherent intellectual group. Up to seven fellows are selected.
Faculty Research Fellows in the residential program are expected to reside within 10 - 15 miles of Stanford and to have their primary office at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. Fellows are expected to be relieved of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. They will meet with other Faculty Research Fellows and Affiliated Faculty for an in-house luncheon seminar.
Short absences (totaling no more than one week per quarter) may be necessary; however, fellows are requested to be in regular daily attendance throughout their stay. Fellows who are absent for more than this will receive a prorated stipend or may have funding withdrawn.
Fellows must be continuously on faculty for the duration of their residence or their fellowship may be withdrawn.
Fellows will contribute to the work of the Institute in one of several ways, for example:
Fellows receive faculty-equivalent privileges in using Stanford's libraries and other facilities, and an office at the Institute with standard equipment.
Fellows are responsible for making their own living arrangements, including housing, schooling for children, and transportation. The Institute can provide information on available options.
Fellows should factor moving and relocation expenses into their overall budget. An allowance will not be provided by the Clayman Institute for academic year 2010-11. We strongly advise fellows to have a minimum of $3,000 USD available when they arrive at Stanford to pay for housing deposits, furniture rental, meals, and other miscellaneous costs.
International fellows will need to apply for a J-1 Visa with assistance from Institute staff. With information gathered by staff from the fellow, including a copy of the fellow's passport biographical page, a SEVIS Visa Certificate (DS-2019) will be prepared and mailed to the fellow in order for them to apply for a J-1 Visa. This process must begin no later than six weeks prior to a fellow's arrival. All J1 Exchange Visitors must show evidence of funds equal to at least $2,500 per month ($30,000 per year) for the duration of their stay.
Stanford makes no provision for fellows to purchase health insurance, and the Institute will not provide medical insurance or other benefits. External fellows must bring their own medical coverage with them or purchase an individual plan during their stay in California.
The conference room at Serra House (capacity 25) is available for fellows to book for meetings and seminars at no charge.
