The Challenge

Design, ignite, and grow sustainable social movements that install lasting behavioral shifts on campus and beyond.

Principles

This Challenge is built on the recognition that the solutions to our most pressing local and global problems must be shaped with holistic, multi-perspective approaches. While technology and economic innovation are critical components, social innovation must play a leading role. Social-M aims to nurture the sort of social innovation that moves people to act.

The initiative has been designed to engage and excite social scientists and artists in fields like anthropology, history, sociology, psychology, music, and education. Above all, Social-M has been made for them. They are the guiding experts on human thought and behavior, on motivation, communication, and interaction. They are best equipped to rise to this Challenge, and most essential to its success.

It is also for those in the hard sciences, in engineering, in business, and in design who want to help society soar. However well-intentioned a policy, elegant a technology, or streamlined a business, crossing the gap between idea and adoption will always depend on the people for whom each product is meant. These thinkers will join into teams that can harness their technical prowess.

As a community, we will develop the new thinking to unite aspirations and actions.

Goals

1. Fuel, ignite, and support transdisciplinary social innovation at Stanford

2. Form high-impact, cooperative coalitions around shared objectives, helping existing or nascent initiatives to grow and thrive

3. Provide a design space to test and evaluate social movement theories

4. Familiarize Stanford community members with the resources they have to affect change at the University and beyond

5. Attract new thinkers and contributors to the conversations happening at Stanford

6. Celebrate the diversity of ideas, interests, and passions in our campus and off-campus communities
