    Men’s Fencing Wins
    NCAA Western Regional Championhips

    Women take second
    as the Cardinal gears up for the
    NCAA Championships, March 23-26 (Stanford will host).

    March 13, 2000

    Pasadena, Calif. - The Stanford men’s fencing team took first place overall on Saturday, March 11 at the NCAA Western Regional Championships hosted at the California Institute of Technology. The men’s team placed first in the foil and the sabre, and took second place in the epee.

    Individually for the men’s team, Stanford had a one-two-three sweep of the foil competition, with Alex Wood going undefeated to take first place, Felix Reichling placing second with a record of 13-1 and Nick Furrow placing third. The Cardinal also had a one-two sweep of the saber with Robert Owens finishing undefeated 14-0 to take first place and Dave LaValle taking second with a record of 13-1. Jared Delgin placed sixth in the sabre with a 9-5 record. In the epee, Eric Tribbett took second place with a record of 12-1, Graham Allen took third and Tom Hunt placed sixth.

    The Stanford women’s fencing team also turned in an outstanding performance at regionals, with the team taking second overall. The Cardinal women took first in the saber, third in the epee and fourth in the foil.

    Individually in the epee, Annie Simpson went 8-2 to take second place, and Jessica Lisagor went 7-3 to place third. Stanford’s Ute Breden placed first in the foil, undefeated at 9-0. She was the only Cardinal competing in the foil. Stanford had a one-two-three sweep of the sabre, with Diane Boudalis going 10-1 to place first, Katie Stephan placing second and Colleen O'Kelly taking third.

    Stanford will host the NCAA Championships for both mens and womens fencing on March 23-26 in Maples Pavilion. The official announcement for fencers selected to compete in the Championships will be made Wednesday, March 15.
