Stanford is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and is adjacent to Palo Alto, CA. The closest nearby airports are San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and San Jose International Airport (SJC). From there, you can reach the Stanford area via bus, train (Caltrain commuter rail) or shared van service (SuperShuttle). Most airport-to-Stanford public transportation options take around 60-90 minutes. Be warned that taxi fares from the airports are expensive ($70-$100).
Via bus: Take the SamTrans KX bus SOUTH towards the PALO ALTO CALTRAIN stop. From the PALO ALTO CALTRAIN, downtown hotels and campus are accessible by foot.
Via train: Take the BART from the airport towards the SAN BRUNO stop. At the SAN BRUNO stop, switch trains to the DALY CITY/MILLBRAE route heading south. At the MILLBRAE stop, exit and switch to the CALTRAIN heading south towards SAN JOSE. Exit at the PALO ALTO CALTRAIN stop. From here, downtown hotels and campus are accessible by foot.
Via shuttle: Contact SuperShuttle to arrange a pickup.
**Note** The PALO ALTO TRANSIT CENTER and the PALO ALTO CALTRAIN stop are essentially the same location, and both are located right between the Stanford campus and downtown Palo Alto.
Via bus: Take the 10 WB (west-bound) bus from Terminal A to the SANTA CLARA TRANSIT CENTER. Take the 522 WB (west-bound) bus to the PALO ALTO TRANSIT CENTER. From the PALO ALTO TRANSIT CENTER, downtown hotels and campus are accessible by foot.

Travel within the Bay Area is convenient through a variety of public transportation options:
Caltrain - train system excellent for train travel along the bay (San Francisco to San Jose)
BART - train system ideal for travel near and within San Francisco
SamTrans - bus system good for travel around Palo Alto and nearby cities
Stanford Marguerite - free Stanford bus system for travel around Stanford and nearby areas
VTA - bus and LRT system good for the region from Stanford to San Jose. LRT runs from Mountain View and through San Jose (if you are going to FIO take note)
We encourage visitors to check out these websites and become familiar with route schedules to make their visit more pleasant! If accessible, Google Maps is a useful resource for planning trip routes via public transportation.
