Financial Aid
The department maintains a continuing
program of financial aid for graduate students, consisting
of a combination of fellowships, research assistantships, and
teaching assistantships. Typically, an award consists of two
components: a tuition grant and a monthly stipend. Both partial
and full support packages are available.
At the Ph.D. level, all students typically receive a support package consisting
of tuition remuneration along with a full monthly stipend. The most common
type of Ph.D. award is a research assistantship funded by a sponsored research
project. Usually, students are able to utilize results from this research
project towards their thesis dissertation. A typical one-half time research
assistantship award covers 9 units of tuition, which is considered a full
load for a post-MS student. In addition, this award pays a monthly stipend
(set by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Dept.) for 20 hours per week
of work on the funded research project.
For MS-level studies, a limited number of 9-month fellowship/assistantship
awards are available. These are offered to the most outstanding candidates
admitted, without regard to financial need. Selection of financial aid recipients
is made by the admissions committee within each individual program; decisions
are typically made towards the end of March. Students to whom we are not
able to offer financial aid are encouraged to take advantage of loan programs
available from the university.
