Stanford University proudly invites you to join us for the 2004 Engineers for a Sustainable World National Conference, to be held on the Stanford campus September 30-October 2, 2004.

Our New Name

"Engineers Without Frontiers becomes Engineers for a Sustainable World"

New Address: www.stanford.edu/group/esw

EWF-USA Board of Directors approved a decision to change the name of the organization to Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW). The new name was selected for its accurate depiction of the organization's commitment to sustainable development.

While the "Engineers Without Frontiers" name attracted a number of members, donors, and partners, it also suggested to the public that we worked in the area of "humanitarian assistance", providing immediate aid in emergency situations such as natural disasters, famine, or war. We recognize that it is essential to engage engineers in such situations; however, there are numerous organizations that currently exist in this sector which employ experienced professionals to deliver humanitarian aid. A few include Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

Engineers for a Sustainable World instead focuses on the challenges of long-term, sustainable development - by seeking lasting solutions for reducing poverty, and by working to improve global sustainability in the United States and abroad.

Over the next few months, EWF will complete the transition to Engineers for a Sustainable World. Our website and email addresses are being updated to reflect the change. However, in many ways the organization will remain the same. We will continue to use the "bright ideas" light bulb logo. We will sustain our culture of open dialogue and exchange. We will build partnerships for lasting change. Most importantly, we will remain committed to our goal of improving the quality of life around the world, by engaging engineers in reducing poverty and promoting global sustainability.
