Current Projects
ESW is working on two primary projects this year. Both projects were initiated in Fall 2008, developed by student teams in the 2009 Spring Quarter course, CEE 177S/277S: Design for a Sustainable World. These projects will be continued as part of our Summer 2009 internships, with additional activities in both Indonesia and Mexico.
ESW-GHI Partnership: Tsunami Preparedness and Design in Indonesia
GeoHazards International (GHI) works to reduce suffering due to natural hazards in world’s most vulnerable communities. This project consists of developing a conceptual design of an earthquake- and tsunami-resistant community center in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The project as a whole involves international earth scientists, structural engineers, and community organizers from universities, governmental agencies, and nongovernmental organizations.
ESW-SARAR Partnership: Sustainable Sanitation Systems in Mexico
SARAR Transformacion is a non-profit organization based in Mexico that focuses on developing and promoting ecological sanitation systems. ESW will develop a program of water, sanitation, and hygiene for schools in the CoZiHua Watershed in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Past Projects
- 2008 - Sustainable Campus Design Project in Tanzania
- Over the winter quarter (07-08), we held weekly meetings and developed a range of design concepts; our recommendations were delivered to the architect responsible for creating the master plan, and presented to the Bahati Board. Winter 2008: Bahati Education
- 2007 - Earthquake Safety of Vernacular Housing in the Himalayas
- Students in the Spring 2007 Design for a Sustainable World class compiled information on indigenous designs for earthquake safety to support a project with SEEDs-India. Two students participated in the Summer 2007 ESW-Stanford internship in the Himalayan region of India and Nepal.
