Meeting with Professor Luthy - went well

- Eco San project roadblocks
- his response to the eco-san project or sponsoring a particular person (Sasha) but
- he was supportive of ESW in general
- suggested we write up our vision - get the best ideas together
- he would even help take this to the Dean
[edit]
what do we need from a faculty sponsor?
- someone to provide continuity year to year as students come and go
- someone to help us avoid pitfalls
- someone who understands the beaurocrasy
[edit]
workshop for letter or write up (who's for brunch?)
- this might be a good opportunity to get together
- how should we bring together the community as a whole?
- brainstorming might work best at a general meeting
- would need to be organized, stem from a single point of view
[edit]
Brainstorming on workshops - HANDS ON MAKES THEM FUN
Use the website to get ideas flowing
- construction
- how to horizontally reinforce
- concrete should set for 28 days
- safety considerations
- putting structures on a shake table
- water filter
- solar cells
- eco sanitation
- some workshops at the conference
- welding a water pump
- rammed earth
- help at the retreat place (more than just a workshop)
- mending fences, painting, other?
- Armand was interested in finding any professors who might be interested in Brazil ranch
- building columbian water pump
- connect with DSchool: construct a pump workshop
[edit]
bio diesel
- keeping it fun will be a big part
- can make in a blender
- more hands on than academic
- combine it with food!
- who was a student group? Students for a Sustainable Stanford worked on this
- other people who have experience with this?
- it would be good to bring in people with hands-on experience
- can still get waste oil from kitchens?
- how to convert a diesel engine to burn vegitable oil
- could also make soaps and lotions from the glycerines
- stanford soap
There will be some safety issues, may need waivers, some training
- bring in EHS?
Andrew has map of Biodiesel nearby facilities
[edit]
Water filtration workshop
- let's pick a date?
- sand?
- mirrors? TiO2?
- kind of a boring, unless there's a quick test for pathogens
- hydrogen sulfide?
- before and after? We would need to 'spike' the water
- who are the other contacts? Who wants to lead it?
- Greg? Sophie?
[edit]
when to do it? how to publicize?
- After the 6th or 7th week?
- combine with general meeting: workshop brainstorming + publicizing
- Eric can look into information on biodiesel
- water filtration or biodiesel?
- when is the Energy Forum?
- push for Feb 17th or 24th?
[edit]
Spring class as a group of workshops
- short course might offer students the ability to learn a skill
- each officer could take one day and set up their own class
- could be one or two unit class, less of a hard thing for students to commit to
- combine workshops and general meetings, ask the general memebers what they would like
- how long? an afternoon on the weekend 3 or 4 hours
- this should tie in with Karim and his ideas
[edit]
To Do
- survey monkey for letter writing campaign (before end of month?)
- everyone put up a picture or something on the 'contactESW' page of the Wiki
- Eric and Andrew will start looking up biodiesel information
- Whit will set up blank pages for workshop ideas
- Heather to ask Molly about funding for TA for the Spring
