Meeting with Professor Luthy - went well

  • explained what we have been up to
  • Molly took some heat for issues last year
  • Eco San project roadblocks
    • his response to the eco-san project or sponsoring a particular person (Sasha) but
    • he was supportive of ESW in general
      • suggested we write up our vision - get the best ideas together
      • he would even help take this to the Dean

what do we need from a faculty sponsor?

  • someone to provide continuity year to year as students come and go
  • someone to help us avoid pitfalls
  • someone who understands the beaurocrasy

workshop for letter or write up (who's for brunch?)

  • this might be a good opportunity to get together
  • how should we bring together the community as a whole?
  • brainstorming might work best at a general meeting
    • would need to be organized, stem from a single point of view

Use the website to get ideas flowing

  • construction
    • how to horizontally reinforce
    • concrete should set for 28 days
    • safety considerations
    • putting structures on a shake table
  • water filter
  • solar cells
  • eco sanitation
  • some workshops at the conference
    • welding a water pump
    • rammed earth
  • help at the retreat place (more than just a workshop)
    • mending fences, painting, other?
    • Armand was interested in finding any professors who might be interested in Brazil ranch

  • connect with DSchool: construct a pump workshop

bio diesel

  • keeping it fun will be a big part
  • can make in a blender
  • more hands on than academic
  • combine it with food!
  • who was a student group? Students for a Sustainable Stanford worked on this
    • other people who have experience with this?
    • it would be good to bring in people with hands-on experience
  • can still get waste oil from kitchens?
  • how to convert a diesel engine to burn vegitable oil
  • could also make soaps and lotions from the glycerines
    • stanford soap

There will be some safety issues, may need waivers, some training

  • bring in EHS?

Water filtration workshop

  • let's pick a date?
  • sand?
  • mirrors? TiO2?
  • kind of a boring, unless there's a quick test for pathogens
    • hydrogen sulfide?
  • before and after? We would need to 'spike' the water
  • who are the other contacts? Who wants to lead it?
    • Greg? Sophie?

when to do it? how to publicize?

  • After the 6th or 7th week?
  • combine with general meeting: workshop brainstorming + publicizing
  • Eric can look into information on biodiesel
  • water filtration or biodiesel?
  • when is the Energy Forum?
  • push for Feb 17th or 24th?

Spring class as a group of workshops

  • short course might offer students the ability to learn a skill
  • each officer could take one day and set up their own class
  • could be one or two unit class, less of a hard thing for students to commit to
  • combine workshops and general meetings, ask the general memebers what they would like
  • how long? an afternoon on the weekend 3 or 4 hours
  • this should tie in with Karim and his ideas

To Do

  • survey monkey for letter writing campaign (before end of month?)
  • everyone put up a picture or something on the 'contactESW' page of the Wiki
  • Eric and Andrew will start looking up biodiesel information
  • Whit will set up blank pages for workshop ideas
  • Heather to ask Molly about funding for TA for the Spring
