Class

This spring, ESW is sponsoring a class called CEE 177s/277s Design for a Sustainable World, which compares old Himalayan techniques of constructing earthquake proof housing with modern techniques. Students will conduct formal literature searches and enter that information in a database that will be helpful to folks at SEEDs, an NGO partner based in India whom we've worked with for awhile now. Check out the blogs section of esw.stanford.edu for more information. There will be internship opportunities available.

Workshops

We're also teaming up with some students at the Graduate School of Business to help provide LED lighting to rural Myanmar. We hope to have a formal "Build Fest" day where students will learn how to solder LED lights and hear about the barriers and challenges that villagers in Myanmar face in getting simple lighting, by which they can read and perform everyday tasks.

Ashoka Fellow Anil Chitrakar

In conjunction with this LED light building workshop, we will have Ashoka fellow Anil Chitrakar speak about his solar lighting project and dispense advice on establishing a social entrepreneurship. Check out his impressive bio at http://www.ashoka.org/node/2745. He has done some really amazing work and will be stopping by Stanford on other appointment. We are fortunate to get to borrow him for ESW.

Committees

We will establish some working committees to push through full-on biodiesel implementation at Stanford, as well as the ecosanitation facility at the Farm.
