Bread
and Belonging: All are Welcome
Bread
& Belonging, a weekly gathering for dinner and conversation, meets
every Tuesday of the school year from 5:30 to 7:00, usually in The
CIRCLE Common Room. Our gathering always consists of dinner
(almost always home-cooked), conversation, and prayer. This quarter, we've
taken up the topic of what Progressive Christianity is and what it means
to be a Progressive Christian. All are welcome!
This
quarter, Bread and Belonging will consist of a
series of discussions on Christ and Culture, with a look at
the different ways there are of being Christian in the world.
Some
other typical B&B activities...
Discussion:
-
How
do we interpret scripture? With more than 5,000 existing partial Biblical
manuscripts, how do scholars & readers determine which ones are
closest to the original meaning and intention of the author?
- What is
the relationship between faith and science? One offers certainty while
the other requires that we suspend our demand for certainty. Isn’t
that an obvious contradiction? Is it oxymoronic to use the words Christian
and scientist in the same sentence?
- What is
the difference between the theology of Paul the apostle and the theology
of Jesus? Which one is more “orthodox”?
- What
influence does faith have on our moral compass? What are we called to
do and to be in the world today?
- What did
Jesus have to say about power and violence? Was Jesus naïve or
radically prophetic? Does he have anything to say to our current culture
and world?
- What is
the place of wealth in Christian life and, for those who are wealthy,
what responsibilities do we have?
- In our
predominantly male culture, how important is the role of women, feminism,
and the sacred feminine to our faith?
- What are
the characteristics of a soulful romantic relationship? Beyond the typical
compatibility questions, what would a soulful romantic relationship
look like?
- Priorities-
how to decide when faith, good grades, parties, and personal hygiene
start to become mutually exclusive
- Christian
Music: Was Hank Hill right when he said: "Can't you see your
not making Christianiy better, you're just making Rock and Roll worse?"
- What
is it to be Lutheran/Episcopalian/Methodist/Presbyterian etc. ("Same
groceries, different bag")
- Tough
issues - maintaining a Christian attitude while keeping your Christian
principles
- Bible
