Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Co-director of the HCI Group

Scott Klemmer is an experienced dialectician. As an undergraduate, he spent half his time in the Graphic Design department at the Rhode Island School of Design, and the other half in the Computer Graphics Lab at Brown University. His first project as an educator was to bring the studio critique model of art education to the more technical domain of computer science.

His dissertation work at UC Berkeley addressed tangible user interfaces: applications that merge the physical world of walls, whiteboards, and notebooks, with the electronic world of pixels, dynamic content, and remote communication. His research is technical, yet it is inspired by and imbued with an understanding of the rich and subtle engagement that we have with our physical environments and artifacts.

Through the d.school Scott hopes to engage students in a new model of education that is informed by and accountable to both the empirical and the aesthetic.

Scott is a happy resident of the Bernal Heights neighborhood in San Francisco. He loves being able to walk and bike to many of the city's finest burrito shops.
