Curriculum Vitae
I am broadly interested in understanding the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity across multiple spatial and temporal scales, and from empirical and applied/conservation perspectives. To take a first stab at this interest I am studying the spatial structure of grasshopper communities in central New Mexico. Specifically, I am using patterns of species abundance and distribution across special and environmental gradients to understand how stochastic dispersal and deterministic niche differentiation structure ecological communities. I use experimental tests to understand potential niche variables, such as diet, and also macroecological patterns, such as association between species’ geographic ranges at the continental scale, to identify ecological mechanisms that may be important to species coexistence. Other projects in the works include studying interactions between vertebrate frugivores and plants across heterogeneous landscapes in southeast Mexico in order to gain understanding of how anthropogenic impacts affect not only species diversity, but also ecosystem functions such as seed dispersal. |
