My name is Derek Stevenson, and I am the current president of
Delta Upsilon Alpha here at Stanford University. My purpose here
is to provide you with some information as you make your decisions
regarding Rush and the process of pledging a fraternity.
Right about now there is probably a lot of pressure from different
fraternities, telling you why you should join their organization
and not another fraternity. Not to mention your drawmates, roommates,
and dormmates, all of which are being heavily recruited from a
variety of organizations. Since you're reading this page, I'm
assuming you have an interest in Delta Upsilon Alpha.
Now I don't want to get into the traditional speech about brotherhood,
the principles of our organization, and so forth and so on. While
those are important points, they relate more to an education you
gain once you have decided to join the fraternity. The salient
facts are that we are a non-hazing, non-secret fraternity, dedicated
to creating a strong bond between the brothers. There will be
no lumbering elephant, gentlemen.
In addition, you have the opportunity to do something completely
novel at Stanford. Many of you want to leave a mark in your four
years here, and this is the prime opportunity to do so. As a
large pledge class, you will have the chance to form the character,
organization, and direction of the fraternity based on your personal
beliefs and desires, almost from the ground up. Because we are
a young group, there is this possibility, a possibility you will
not have to the same extent in any other fraternity.
One of the components in joining the organization and the direction
in which it heads will be rejoining Delta Upsilon
International.
As of now, we are in the colony application process, and we hope
to be a fully recognized colony come Fall 1996. While there is
work to be done, there is a strong possibility of regaining the
old Delta Upsilon house - 553 Mayfield, located next to Columbae
and Muwekma-tah-Ruk on the Row. As many of you know, there are
not a lot of houses quite so ideally located, and quite as nice
as 553.
Some of you will have known each other prior to joining the fraternity.
However, it's really important you get to know your potential
pledgemates as well. Along these lines, we strongly encourage
you to attend the Thursday night event, which will be at 8 pm
in Barristers. Barristers is located in the Toyon Eating Clubs,
between Arcos and the Terrace.
I hope you understand the magnitude of your opportunity here.
Don't pass this up!
Sincerely,
Derek Stevenson
