Collaborative international programs allow contrast and comparisons of practices, policies and educational principles but are not without barriers faced by candidates which can include but are not limited to culture shock and communication and language adjustments. Comparisons of international educational institutions are telling when examined through transfer credit policies, degree recognition, institutional accreditation and the value of academic credits in a globalized educational marketplace. China and Chinese educators recognize that movement and take it most seriously as demonstrated by the group of educational ambassadors who have contributed a variety of perspectives and interests to this volume. They are a new wave of thinkers whose studies embrace their native culture and open minds to alternative ways of understanding and acting on rapidly changing educational circumstances for learners, teachers and administrators.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Asian Education Fri, 01 Mar 2013 22:23:18 +0000 kkerns 26557 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Language, education and citizenship in Japan https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/language-education-and-citizenship-japan <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Language%2C+education+and+citizenship+in+Japan&amp;rft.btitle=Japan+anthropology+workshop+series&amp;rft.isbn=9780415501033+%28hardback%29&amp;rft.date=2013&amp;rft.tpages=148&amp;rft.aulast=Castro-V%C3%A1zquez&amp;rft.aufirst=Genaro&amp;rft.pub=Routledge&amp;rft.place=London+%3B+New+York"></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/26931">Castro-Vázquez,Genaro</a></div> <div class="biblio_source"><h3>Source: </h3> Japan anthropology workshop series, Routledge, London ; New York, p.148 (2013)</div> <h3>Call Number:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/stacks/lc%3Fsize%3Dscreen">Cubb LB2376.6 .J3 C37 2013</a> <h3>URL:</h3><a href="http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9854250">http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9854250</a> <h3>Keywords:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/35029">Foreign--Japan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/35035">Foreign--Japan--Social conditions</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/35031">Language acquisition--Japan--Foreign speakers</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/31019">Language and culture--Japan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/31013">Language and languages--Study and teaching--Japan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/35033">Sociolinguistics--Japan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/841">Students</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/35037">Students--Japan--Social conditions</a> <h3>Abstract:</h3> <p>Summary: "Based on extensive original research, this book explores the early educational experiences of foreign children in Japan. It considers foreign children's experiences of Japanese schools, examines the special tutoring such children often have to improve their language proficiency, and explores the role of mothers in encouraging their children's education. It contrasts the experiences of foreign children with those of Japanese children, sets out the extensive difficulties foreign children encounter in becoming fully accepted by and integrated into Japanese society"-- Provided by publisher.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" wide variety of regional organizations and interactive patterns, reflecting in large part its increasing role in the global economic and political engagements. Higher Education constitutes a distinct sphere of activity within this overall pattern of regionalization, being the site of a wide range of organizational efforts to promote this outcome. Within this overall pattern, however, one can observe important differences in how patterns of national development persist in some instances and are overcome in others by the forces propelling regionalization. This volume seeks to provide a useful conceptual structure for description and analysis of these phenomena, illustrated by insightful case studies of the role being performed in this overall regionalization by individual countries"-- Provided by publisher.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Asian Education Higher Education Fri, 25 Jan 2013 21:51:28 +0000 kkerns 26087 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Taiwan education at the crossroad : when globalization meets localization https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/taiwan-education-crossroad-when-globalization-meets-localization <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Taiwan+education+at+the+crossroad+%3A+when+globalization+meets+localization&amp;rft.btitle=International+%26amp%3B+development+education&amp;rft.isbn=9780230110892+%28hardback%29&amp;rft.date=2012&amp;rft.volume=1st&amp;rft.tpages=291&amp;rft.aulast=Zhou&amp;rft.aufirst=Zhuying&amp;rft.pub=Palgrave+Macmillan&amp;rft.place=New+York"></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/26527">Zhou,Zhuying</a>; <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/26529">Ching,Gregory S.</a></div> <div class="biblio_source"><h3>Source: </h3> International &amp; development education, Palgrave Macmillan, Volume 1st, New York, p.291 (2012)</div> <h3>Call Number:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/stacks/lc%3Fsize%3Dscreen">Cubb LA1136.81 .Z64 2012</a> <h3>URL:</h3><a href="http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9685991">http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9685991</a> <h3>Keywords:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34509">Education and globalization--Taiwan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34507">Education--Taiwan</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34513">Taiwan--Politics and government</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34511">Taiwan--Social life and customs</a> <h3>Abstract:</h3> <p>Summary: "Chou and Ching examine the processes of schooling in Taiwan amidst social, cultural, economic, and political conflict resulting from local and global dilemmas. Whereas thirty years ago, British and American experts believed that the best way to improve the quality of English teaching was to cancel any programs below the secondary level, Asian nations as well as European are now introducing English in primary school. But there are major obstacles to overcome: the training of enough local teachers or the hiring of English speakers, the preparation of suitable teaching materials, the development of useful tests, and the design of workable curriculums. The chapters in this book, written by leading English-teaching professionals in seven Asian countries and originally delivered at the 2010 annual conference of Asia TEFL which took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, describe and analyze national policies and how they are implemented. The coverage is wide: China with its huge number of students learning English, Japan working to make the transition from elementary to secondary school seamless, Singapore continuing to use English as medium of instruction for its multilingual population, Korea developing English education policies to recognize the increased role of English alongside the national language, India building on its colonial past to make English an economic resource, Vietnam fitting English into a program of national rebuilding, and Taiwan spreading its English teaching outside the national capital. This is not a report of the views of outside experts, but of local experiences understood by local scholars of international standing. Policy makers, educators, researchers and scholars will be able to gain valuable insights from Asian experts"-- Provided by publisher.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Asian Education Education Policy Second Language Learning Thu, 13 Dec 2012 00:27:32 +0000 kkerns 25769 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Student activism in Asia : between protest and powerlessness https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/student-activism-asia-between-protest-and-powerlessness <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Student+activism+in+Asia+%3A+between+protest+and+powerlessness&amp;rft.isbn=9780816679683+%28hbk.%29&amp;rft.date=2012&amp;rft.tpages=318&amp;rft.aulast=Weiss&amp;rft.aufirst=Meredith&amp;rft.pub=University+of+Minnesota+Press&amp;rft.place=Minneapolis"></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/24575">Weiss,Meredith L.</a>; <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/26203">Aspinall,Edward</a></div> <div class="biblio_source"><h3>Source: </h3> University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis, p.318 (2012)</div> <h3>Call Number:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/stacks/lc%3Fsize%3Dscreen">Cubb LA1058.7 .S88 2012</a> <h3>URL:</h3><a href="http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9701797">http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/9701797</a> <h3>Keywords:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34199">Asia--Politics and government</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34195">College students--Political activity--Asia</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34193">Student movements--Asia</a>, <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/keyword/34197">Students--Political activity--Asia</a> <h3>Abstract:</h3> <p>Summary: "Since World War II, students in East and Southeast Asia have led protest movements that toppled authoritarian regimes in countries such as Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand. Elsewhere in the region, student protests have shaken regimes until they were brutally suppressed--most famously in China's Tiananmen Square and in Burma. But despite their significance, these movements have received only a fraction of the notice that has been given to American and European student protests of the 1960s and 1970s. The first book in decades to redress this neglect, Student Activism in Asia tells the story of student protest movements across Asia.Taking an interdisciplinary, comparative approach, the contributors examine ten countries, focusing on those where student protests have been particularly fierce and consequential: China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Burma, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. They explore similarities and differences among student movements in these countries, paying special attention to the influence of four factors: higher education systems, students' collective identities, students' relationships with ruling regimes, and transnational flows of activist ideas and inspirations. The authors include leading specialists on student activism in each of the countries investigated. Together, these experts provide a rich picture of an important tradition of political protest that has ebbed and flowed but has left indelible marks on Asia's sociopolitical landscape.Contributors: Patricio N. However, the government aspires to improve learning outcomes even further. Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education: Lessons from PISA for Japan focuses on how Japan is reforming its education system not only to produce better learning outcomes, but to equip students with the skills they need to navigate through the unpredictable labour market of the future and to participate in society as active citizens. This is the second in a series of reports examining how education systems are handling the challenge of preparing their students for a world of interconnected populations, rapid technological change, and instantaneous availability of vast amounts of information. Like the first volume, Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education: Lessons from PISA for the United States, this report presents examples from other countries with consistently high-performing education systems or countries that, by redesigning policies and practices, have been able to improve their education outcomes, as measured by the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the world's most comprehensive and rigorous survey of students' skills and attitudes towards learning" --Back cover.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Asian Education Assessment Thu, 18 Oct 2012 22:00:19 +0000 kkerns 25091 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Language arts in Asia : literature and drama in English, Putonghua and Cantonese https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/language-arts-asia-literature-and-drama-english-putonghua-and-cantonese <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Language+arts+in+Asia+%3A+literature+and+drama+in+English%2C+Putonghua+and+Cantonese&amp;rft.isbn=9781443836692+%28hbk.%29&amp;rft.date=2012&amp;rft.tpages=420&amp;rft.aulast=DeCoursey&amp;rft.auinit=C+A&amp;rft.pub=Cambridge+Scholars&amp;rft.place=Newcastle+Upon+Tyne"></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/25053">DeCoursey,C.
