Her family, displaced by Hurricane Katrina, returns home to find a radically altered public education system. Geraldlynns parents hope their daughter's new school will prepare her college-but the teenager has ideals and ambitions of her own. Aidan is a fresh-faced Harvard grad drawn to New Orleans by the possibility of bringing change to a flood-ravaged city. He teaches at an ambitious charter school with a group of newcomers determined to show the world they can use science, data, and hard work to build a model school. Mary Laurie is a veteran educator who becomes principal of one of the first public high schools to reopen after Katrina. Laurie and her staff find they must fight each day not only to educate the city's teenagers, but to keep the Walker community safe and whole. In this powerful narrative non-fiction debut, the lives of these three characters provide readers with a vivid and sobering portrait of education in twenty-first-century America. Hope Against Hope works in the same tradition as Random Family and There Are No Children Here to capture the challenges of growing up and learning in a troubled world"-- Provided by publisher.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Alternative Education School Reform Special Needs Fri, 24 May 2013 17:39:47 +0000 kkerns 27751 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Teaching children who are hard to reach : relationship-driven classroom practice https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/teaching-children-who-are-hard-reach-relationship-driven-classroom-practice <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Teaching+children+who+are+hard+to+reach+%3A+relationship-driven+classroom+practice&amp;rft.isbn=9781452244440+%28pbk.+%3A+alk.+paper%29&amp;rft.date=2013&amp;rft.tpages=210&amp;rft.aulast=Marlowe&amp;rft.aufirst=Michael&amp;rft.pub=Corwin+Press&amp;rft.place=Thousand+Oaks%2C+Calif."></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/28067">Marlowe,Michael J.</a>; security in urban public schools and lives of young people amid escalating global economic volatility and domestic social polarization. In accessible and vivid language, Means confronts how neoliberal restructuring and crisis have contributed to the fraying of the urban social contract, processes of violence and criminalization, and the erosion of the educative and human development capacity of urban public schools serving historically disadvantaged and marginalized communities. Through an ethnographic case study in a low-income and racially segregated neighborhood and public high school in the city of Chicago, Means highlights the voices and experiences of educators and young people living and working at the margins of the new urban geography. Despite precarious conditions, Means demonstrates that there exists a wealth of positive social relations, knowledge, and desire for change among educators, youth, and communities that can be built upon and nurtured in order to develop more ethical and restorative approaches to urban schooling and for promoting more secure and equitable democratic futures for young people"-- Provided by publisher.</p> <h3>Publication Language: </h3><p>eng</p> <ul class="biblio-export-buttons"><li>Export As:</li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/tagged/" title="Click to download the EndNote Tagged formatted file">Tagged</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/xml/" title="Click to download the XML formatted file">XML</a></li><li> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/export/bibtex/" title="Click to download the BibTEX formatted file">BibTex</a></li><li> <a href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar?btnG=Search%2BScholar&amp;as_q=%22%22&amp;as_sauthors=&amp;as_occt=any&amp;as_epq=&amp;as_oq=&amp;as_eq=&amp;as_publication=&amp;as_ylo=&amp;as_yhi=&amp;as_sdtAAP=1&amp;as_sdtp=1" title="Click to search Google Scholar for this entry">Google Scholar</a></li></ul> Sociology of Education Special Needs Urban Education Fri, 19 Apr 2013 21:53:02 +0000 kkerns 27273 at https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley Cultural reciprocity in special education : building family-professional relationships https://www.stanford.edu/group/cubberley/content/cultural-reciprocity-special-education-building-family-professional-relationships <div class="field field-type-text field-field-biblio-featured-queue"> <h3 class="field-label">Featured Queue:&nbsp;</h3> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't Queue </div> </div> </div> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Abook&amp;rft.title=Cultural+reciprocity+in+special+education+%3A+building+family-professional+relationships&amp;rft.isbn=9781598572315+%28pbk.%29&amp;rft.date=2012&amp;rft.tpages=199&amp;rft.aulast=Kalyanpur&amp;rft.aufirst=Maya&amp;rft.pub=Paul+H.+Brookes+Pub.+Co.&amp;rft.place=Baltimore%2C+Md."></span><div class="biblio_type"><h3>Publication Type:</h3> Book</div> <div class="biblio_authors"><h3>Authors:</h3> <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/27629">Kalyanpur,Maya</a>; <a href="/group/cubberley/biblio/author/27631">Harry,Beth</a></div> <div class="biblio_source"><h3>Source: </h3> Paul H.
