Most Stanford dissertations from 1989 forward are available online in full text from Dissertations & Theses at Stanford University. These are free to Stanford faculty, students, and staff and can be purchased by others. Circulating copies of Stanford University School of Education (SUSE) dissertations are available in Cubberley Library. To locate these dissertations, search by author and/or title in the online catalog, Socrates. Dissertations from 1990 to present are shelved in the main reading room of Cubberley Library.

Since 1974, dissertations have been given a simple classification number, 3781, and the year of completion. Within a specific year, they are arranged alphabetically by author's surname. Dissertations from 1974-1988, as well as undergraduate honors theses, are shelved in the North Reading Room balcony.

Prior to 1974, dissertations were cataloged and classified using Cubberley's expansion of the Dewey decimal system. These are fully cataloged and are listed in the online catalog, Socrates.

Some dissertations from other universities are also part of the Cubberley collection. They can be located by author, title, and subject in Socrates.
