Jones, Stephen: Aan het puzzelen: accounting for the Dutch progressive aan het construction
This paper presents an LFG account of the Dutch progressive 'aan het' construction. Although the presence of the definite article 'het' points to a nominalised form of the verb, this account assumes that the construction is in fact a complex inflection. C-structural constraints on the 'aan het' construction are accounted for by extending the phrase structure rules for Poortvliet's (2015) proposed fourth construction and introducing AAN-HET as a possible value of Kaplan and Zaenen's (2003) VFORM attribute. Data from Mortier (2008) are presented to show the emergence of the form, with Bresnan and Mugane (2006) contributing to an account of a possible grammaticalisation pathway.
