Six-A-Side Match Report

Stanford A

Stanford A went into the 1998 Sixes as defending champions. The mysterious disappearance of last years fielder of the tournament, Ganesh, meant that the line up was: Sajjad, Abbas, Amar, Akhtar, Zain and Rohan. A tough draw meant facing the much loved Cougars in the first round. Stanford A batted first, and got off to a very slow start, taking just 5 off the first over, with Abbas unable to force the pace at all. Sajjad, still recovering from a badly broken thumb, then took charge, before having to retire on 35. Abbas, Amar and Akhtar chipped in, as did the extras column, but the highlight of the innings was the contribution of Zain. Sent in to face the final three balls of the innigs, Zain responded by pushing the first one back to the bowler, square cutting the second one for two, and then generously sacrificing his partner to a run out attempting a pointless single off the final ball of the innings.

Rohan then opened the bowling for Stanford. After 3 good deliveries to start with, things fell to pieces. First, a wide down the leg side of which Supriya would have been proud. Then Sunny popped one straight up in the air, and Sajjad not only spilt a straightforward chance, but managed to lose a fingernail in the process. The next ball went soaring over the mid wicket fence for ten, although things were brought back to level pegging when the final delivery took Sunny's middle stump out of the ground. Some very mixed bowling from Abbas and Sajjad then left Cougars needing just 17 runs off the final two overs, with the weak link in the attack, Amar, yet to bowl. Or so it was thought. Amar's over was phenomenal, yielding just 3 runs, two of them rather streaky ones behind the wicket. Akhtar came on to bowl the final over, and started very well, restriciting the batsmen to just singles and twos. With two balls left, Cougars needed 7 runs. The only way they would win was with a boundary. No surprise then, that the next ball went sailing over the backward square leg boundary for a ten, off the top edge. It was just that sort of a day. The defending champions, ousted in no uncertain terms, in the first round of the tournament.

We won our first game, vs Cruisers -- they scored 70 in 5 overs, we hit the winning run off the last ball. We lost our second game, vs Sunnyvale I -- they scored 80 in 5 overs, we scored 66 off our 5. (awaiting a more detailed report from Bruce if he's ever bothered).
