Levinthal Tutorials
The Levinthal Tutorials are an integral part of the Stanford Creative Writing Program and are designed to allow motivated undergraduate writers to work one-on-one with visiting Stegner Fellows in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Students design their own curriculum and are responsible for its initiation and completion, and Stegner Fellows act as writing mentors and advisors.
The "Levinthals" are offered in the Winter quarter of each year. There are approximately twenty Levinthals available. To apply, students must fill out an application form, submit a writing sample, and outline a program of study. Applicants are selected by a committee of Stegner Fellows. A Levinthal may be applied as English 290 or 292 towards the minor or major with creative writing emphasis.
The student completes a reading list and writing project commensurate with a five unit class (about three books reading and about 50 pages prose or 10 to 15 poems). The student meets with their Stegner Fellow for two hours each week of the quarter.

Application Guidelines:
Each year, the Creative Writing Program welcomes two distinguished guests to teach a Stanford writing seminar to undergraduates; one in poetry and the other in fiction. These unique classes are kept small, limited to twelve students, and they focus on a subject of the writer’s expertise and choosing. The writer also holds a public reading and discussion. This year we welcome Kay Ryan and Richard Powers, both in the winter.
The Four Minute Reading Series is held four times a year and features undergraduate writers along with Jones Lecturers. Each writer reads for four minutes, creating a lively and fast-moving literary event. The Four Minute Readings are held in the Terrace Room of Margaret Jacks Hall.
Need help with your short story, poem, personal essay, or other creative writing project? The Writers' Studio is a chance for Stanford undergraduates to work one-on-one with Stegner Fellows on a drop-in basis. The Writer's Studio is open to all undergrads, whether or not they are taking creative writing classes.
