Courses and Requirements

The English major with creative writing emphasis is a thirteen course major, and the creative writing minor is a six course minor. All Stanford students, regardless of major or minor, are welcome and encouraged to take classes within the program.

Because of the popularity of our courses, students must enroll via an online course lottery which opens when Axess opens for course enrollment. If there is more interest than room in certain classes, the lottery resolves the conflicts first by student status (priority is given to upperclassmen, and those emphazising or minoring in creative writing) and then by chance. Enrolling on Axess is not the same as enrolling in the course lottery, and will not guarantee you a spot in the class! The course lottery is required for the following creative writing courses: English 90, 91, 92, 94, 190 (including all suffixes except G), 191 (including all suffixes), 192 (including all suffixes), and 292.

Note that enrollment in ENGLISH 190G THE GRAPHIC NOVEL and ENGLISH 290 ADVANCED FICTION is by application only; do not enter the lottery for 190G or 290.

NOTE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS, LAW STUDENTS, GSB STUDENTS, ETC: The lottery is for undergraduates, because our courses are for undergraduates. If you enter the lottery, it creates a lot of extra work for us because we have to filter you out of the database. Please e-mail Christina Ablaza if you really want to take a course, and let us know your situation, but please understand that our classes are often impacted and undergraduates have priority.

If have any questions about requirements, please feel free to contact us or visit us in our office: Building 460 (Margaret Jacks Hall, in the front wing of the quad), Room 223.
