Established for over fifty years, the Creative Writing Program is committed to fostering and expanding the exuberant writing talents some students bring to Stanford and many more find here. We provide workshops and independent tutorials in fiction, poetry and nonfiction. Drawing on our talented pool of Stegner Fellows and Jones Lecturers, we enhance those experiences with undergraduate readings and individual mentorship. Our endowed readings and Visiting Writers Series - the Lane Lecture Series, the Stein Visiting Writer, and the Mohr Visiting Poet - are unique events open to the community. The Levinthal Tutorials provide one-on-one guidance for undergraduates. Through its connection with the English Department, the Creative Writing Program offers exciting opportunities to all Stanford Students.
- Eavan Boland
Director, Stanford Creative Writing Program
Due to the generosity of Nancy and Larry Mohr, Stanford undergraduates have the opportunity to take a seminar from a distinguished poet for one quarter each year. In Winter 2012 we welcome former United States Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Glück. For more information about the poet and her course, English 192V The Occasions of Poetry, click here.
The Creative Writing Program is pleased to offer advising hours to any student interested in creative writing. One of our lecturers will be available and will be glad to answer any questions you have about our classes, the Creative Writing minor, or offer guidance and advice as it relates to your own personal writing goals. Please note that this does not replace your faculty advisor.
Advising hours are as follows:
Mondays & Tuesdays: 4pm-5pm
Wednesdays & Thursdays: 2pm-3pm
Come to the Creative Writing Program office on the 2nd floor of Margaret Jacks Hall (Room 223).
We hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity!
The Levinthal Tutorials are an integral part of the Stanford Creative Writing Program and are designed to allow motivated undergraduate writers to work one-on-one with visiting Stegner Fellows in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Students design their own curriculum and are responsible for its initiation and completion, and Stegner Fellows act as writing mentors and advisors.
The "Levinthals" will be offered in poetry, fiction and nonfiction during Winter quarter this year. There are approximately thirty Levinthals available - usually ten in each genre. To apply, students must fill out an application form, submit a writing sample, and outline a program of study. Applicants are selected by Stegner Fellows. A Levinthal may be applied as English 290 or 292 towards the Creative Writing minor or English major with creative writing emphasis.
The student completes a reading list and writing project commensurate with a five unit class (about three books reading and about 50 pages prose or 10 to 15 poems). The student meets with the Stegner Fellow for two hours each week of the quarter.
