Earth Science

Rationale: It is important for elementary school students to have a general understanding of Earth Science. According to the California Science Standards, erosion and its effects on the environment are important science concepts introduced in the 4th grade and covered in more depth in the 6th grade. The rock cycle is introduced in the 4th grade. In grade 6, plate tectonics is studied and used to explain geologic features such as mountains, faults, and volcanoes. Hence the following educational module was developed with the purpose of covering these two important topics.

Disclaimer: Some of the procedures for the activities contained in the lessons have been adapted from various resources listed throughout the module.

Part 1:
Erosion
Introduces soil erosion and methods of erosion control

Part 2:
Model Lithologic Columns
Introduces lithologic columns as a way of visualizing the various strata of a particular geologic formation (outcrop or rock formation) or core sample (drill hole or mine core)
