Add Course Material Wizard

There are two places on the Admin Course Materials page where you can add course material links to your Course Materials page. It is now possible to add course materials as separate items or grouped together within folders.

To add course material links as separate items that exist outside of folders, click the Add Material link on the upper right of the page.

To add course materials links grouped inside of a folder, create the folder first, then add materials to it. Make sure the folder is expanded (i.e. the folder icon to the left of the folder name should show an open folder with a minus sign to its left), or else you will not see the Add Material link. If the folder is collapsed, click on the folder icon to expand it. Click Add Material link below the gray folder title bar.

Note: the maximum size for individual file upload through CourseWork is now 30MB.

Step 1

There are 3 ways to add course material links to the Course Materials page.

Upload a file from your computer: This is the quickest and easiest method. Click the Browse button. A window will appear that allows you to search your computer. Find your file, then click Open. Click Next to advance to Step 2 in the wizard. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Link to a URL:This method allows you to link to a Web page. Type in the complete URL including http://. The best way to enter a URL is to copy and paste the information from a second browser. Note: Click Next to advance to Step 2 in the wizard. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Link to content previously added to this course: This method allows you to select from a list of files that you have previously added to your course. Click Next to advance to the next step in the wizard, Step 2. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Step 2

If you selected Upload a file from your computer or Link to a URL:

Select one of the options that describes the copyright status of the content you are adding or linking to your course. Click Next to advance to Step 3. Click Prev to go back to Step 1 and make changes. Click Cancel to exit without making any changes.

If you selected Link to content previously added to this course:

the file to which you wish to link. Click Next to advance to Step 3. Click Prev to go back to Step 1 and make changes. Click Cancel to exit without making any changes.

Step 3

Enter the title of your file. It is optional to enter information in the description and author fields. Note: If you elect to enter information for these optional fields, it will appear directly below the course material link on the Student View of the Course Materials page.

From the drop-down menu, select the file format. The file format describes the functional or representational type of the document. File type choices were submitted by faculty and cover many types of material. If your course materials do not fit one of these types, select Unknown from the drop-down menu. In many cases the file format (e.g. PDF, HTML) will be automatically listed for a file. If not, you will have to select the file format.

If you selected Link to content previously added to this course, title and file format information are automatically populated.

Click Save to save changes made up to and including this step and exit the wizard. Click Next to advance to Step 4 of the wizard. Click Prev to go back to Step 2 and make changes. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Step 4

You have the option to provide more description about your file by selecting its resource type (e.g., reading, lab, diagram) from the drop-down menu. If none of the pre-specified types applies, you can enter your own value in the "Other" field.

You also have the option to make the course material required or optional. This information will appear below the course material link on the Course Materials page.

Finally, you can define when and for how long particular content material(s) will be available to students in Student View by specifying values for the display beginning and display ending fields.

Click Next to advance to Step 5 of the wizard. Click Prev to go back to Step 3 and make changes. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Step 5

Preview how the course material link will appear on the Course Materials page. Click the name of the file to check if it is the correct file. Click Save to save and post the course material link on the Course Materials page. Click Prev to go back to Step 4 and make changes. Click Cancel to exit the wizard without making any changes.

Final Step

In the final wizard screen, CourseWork reports that you've successfully added a course material link to the Course Materials page. Click OK to exit the wizard and return to the Admin Course Materials page. Click Add Another to repeat the process if you have more than one file to add.
