The Enchanted Broccoli Forest is one of the largest co-ops at Stanford, with close to 60 residents! Named after one of the first all-vegetarian cookbooks, EBF is also a very omnivorous house. Though our house might resemble Kappa Alpha and Narnia in structure, the culture here is distinctly our own. Residents of EBF usually live in two-room doubles, with some singles and a handful of triples (don’t worry, in-house room changes are standard operating procedure). In house draw is determined by a lottery with priority based on seniority. Although EBF might not be run by the same consensus-based approach of some of the other co-ops, it’s definitely not an autocracy. Residents contribute a lot to the operation and climate of the house, cooking delicious meals five times a week, keeping the bathrooms tidy (we try), and taking on special tasks like baking bread, making delicious desserts, or brewing beer for the other residents in the house. We've converted a house storage room into a band room, where anyone in the house can practice their instrument, record a track, or make ill beats. Art (music, visual, etc.) plays a big role in the lives of many folks at EBF, and we're dedicated to creating a supportive and creative place for residents to do their thing.
It’s safe to say residents of EBF enjoy the finer aspects of life, and you’ll often see many folks out on the balconies and our back lawn when the weather’s nice. EBF is a very social house, bred out of the communal tasks that each resident performs each week (cooking or cleaning), and we have numerous social events to foster the community vibe. You also might have heard of our weekly, Wednesday night “Special Gathering of Special Friends,” or “Happy Hour” for short. EBF is an awesome place on campus, where you’ll easily find a comfortable home, great people, and good times. Let's put it this way, there is a reason a huge percentage of people return to EBF once they draw there the first time (37% this year!).
Come to the EBF Work Day on Saturday April 18 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
The goal of our pre-assignment process is to attract freshmen, returning residents and anyone who is excited to live in EBF. We are taking steps to avoid turning pre-assignment into a rush, where applicants are picked for subjective reasons by the staff. To achieve this, we will allow anyone to apply for pre-assignemt, and those who do apply will be picked by lottery.
EBF will take in 28 pre-assignments (50% of the dorm size), 8 of those will be staff members. With the exception of staff, all groups will be chosen by lottery. The remaining 20 slots will be allotted in the following manner:
Pre-assignment at EBF will count as a Tier 2 year.
