Columbae is one of the two vegetarian co-ops that runs by consensus. We are a large community of residents and EAs that come together through good food and tie-dye. Our official theme is social change through non-violent action and we explore this theme through environmental consciousness, guest lectures, and library streaking. The house is a very tight knit community because we live in cozy rooms that switch every quarter and bond over cleaning toilets and doing dishes. Some favorite jobs including baking fresh bread and harvesting the juicy tomatoes from our garden. Yummy smells of freshly baked goods waft through the house and lure you to the kitchen at any hour of the day where you can always enjoy a cup of tea with friends.
50% of our pre-assigned spots we will assign to returning residents. The other 50% we will assign to new residents who will be sophomores or juniors (i.e. current freshmen and sophomores). People who wish to be pre-assigned must be at Stanford in the Fall.
Within each group (returning and new residents), the selection will be totally random (by lottery).
Applicants who wish to be pre-assigned must complete the regular draw requirements (below) by the pre-assignment application deadline (April 22). However, note that for the job requirement, you MUST do your job at Columbae if you would like pre-assignment at Columbae.
Also, Columbae is allowing people to be pre-assigned in pairs, but not in larger groups, because of the limited number of spots we have for pre-assignment. If you would like to be pre-assigned with someone else, please indicate that on your application (both people must submit their own application).
To draw into Columbae, you must do a job at any co-op, and eat dinner and take a quick tour at Columbae. Columbae opens up for tours/jobs/dinners on Sunday, April 12.
Dinners are at 6pm, Sunday through Thursday. Tours will be offered right after dinner at 6:45. If you would like to do your co-op job at Columbae, here are the times of our jobs:
If you are coming to Columbae to do a job, eat dinner, or take a tour, be sure to check in with a manager when you arrive (just ask around to find a staff member). If there are too many people doing jobs that day, we may ask you to come back another time, or we may assign you to an alternate job.
If you are currently abroad and can't do any of these things, e-mail the Columbae staff and we will work something out.
Rooms in Columbae are assigned at the beginning of the quarter, in a meeting the day before classes. Residents switch rooms every quarter, so residents must attend this rooming meeting, or send a proxy.
Columbae has a vegetarian kitchen. While the policy on meat changes from year to year, meat is not cooked in our kitchen, and is often not allowed in our common spaces (meat is always allowed in people's own rooms).
All residents in Columbae must do house jobs. These consist of a weekly job, a biweekly (every other week) job, an End-Of-Quarter job, and quarterly Head Cook (where you come up with the menu for a meal). Jobs are generally between 1 and 3 hours. The policy on missed jobs is decided each year, but usually involves a make-up job and/or a fine.
