"Dateline Soweto" by journalist William Finnegan - in particular chapter 5 which we discussed in class - examines closely how the South African media reacted to the 1986 State of Emergency declared by the South African government in the days surrounding the 10th anniversary of the Soweto uprising. Finnegan documents the government's successful attempts to repress the media and how both western and South African journalists dealt with the pressure.

Washington Post writer Glenn Frankel (and our course instructor) was reporting directly from South Africa during that time and was affected by the government's censuring tactics.
