Collaborate! exists to encourage institutional change at the level of the department, college, university, and profession--change that will foster the development of collaborative writing and research. Research and theory have an important role to play in this process. But unless those who wish to encourage collaboration effect change at the material level of practice, little of significance can occur.

At Ohio State University, for example, the Department of English has worked to craft language for its tenure and promotion guidelines that will be inclusive of collaborative scholarship:

B. Scholarship

... Evidence of scholarship should consist of published or publishable (that is, capable of passing the test of peer-review) writing, singly or collaboratively authored, or, where appropriate, recordings, videotapes films, and works in electronic or other media, singly or collaboratively produced (from the Department of English Pattern of Administration).

Getting such inclusive language added to official academic documents is one very good way to begin making more collaborative scholarly work possible.
