Research Opportunities

Postdoctoral Positions
Prospective postdocs interested in our research are encouraged to contact Sarah Church directly, and to apply for KIPAC fellowships.

Physics or Applied Physics Graduate Students
Current opportunities for graduate students:

  • Development of instrumentation for Argus, a 16-pixel W-Band Spectrometer for the Green Bank Telescope. The prime science interest in Argus is to study the star-formation processes within the Galaxy as well as other nearby and high redshift galaxies by mapping abundant molecular tracers of material from which stars form.
  • Development of instrumentation for the next generation CMB polarization experiments CHIP and QUIET that will search for B-mode polarization at frequencies of 30-90 GHz. Examples of tasks include development of key parts of the instrumentation, including the MMIC arrays, and the cryogenic systems, modeling of the expected science results to determine the optimum design, fielding the instruments and analyzing the data.

Undergraduate Students
We welcome inquiries from current Stanford Physics undergraduate students about summer and school year research positions.

Other Graduate Students
Note: Each year we get many requests from students with experience in computer programming who have been admitted into Masters programs in Computer Science or the School of Engineering. They are often looking for a combination of employment and tuition coverage and have been given (bad) advice that there are opportunities for GSRA appointments in Physics. We only offer GSRA appointments to students whose Ph.D. research include astrophysics topics. This allows us to comply with paragraph 2.c in the Stanford Administrative Guide which states that:
Relevancy — The service performed (teaching or research) must be related to the student’s academic program in order to qualify for the assistantship appointment.
