A brief history

Stanford Students for Choice was founded in October of 1999 by five undergraduates. Given inspiration and tools for action by the Gloria Steinem Leadership Institute (a training offered by Choice USA to pro-choice student activists), the nascent group was disturbed by the lack of discussion on campus about reproductive freedom. The first members aimed to serve students by educating them about growing threats to choice and empowering them to take political action on behalf of their own rights and convictions.

During its tenure as an organization at Stanford, Students for Choice has made its mark. Email membership grew past 300 hundred subscriptions in September of 2005 and continues to climb. SSFC's projects have included:

  • Engaging in letter-writing campaigns to lobby elected officials to vote pro-choice.
  • Working in partnership with state and national organizations such as California Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (CARAL); Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice; Catholics for a Free Choice; and Choice USA, SFC's parent organization.
  • Volunteering for Planned Parenthood.
  • Educating the campus with informational tables, a weekly email news report, action alerts, and publicity in the Stanford Daily.
  • Distributing free condoms.
  • Screening movies on reproductive issues.
  • Sponsoring a workshop on intimate communication, led by local feminist adult book & toy store, Good Vibrations.

Students for Choice hopes to continue and expand its programming in the coming years and emphasizes the importance of building coalitions with other Stanford groups that share its vision for social change.
