We like to blow things up!

What do we do?

The Stanford Alchemy Society, previously known as the Stanford Chemistry Club, is a student-run group sponsored by the Chemistry Dept.

We put on chemistry shows for local elementary, junior high, and high schools in the Bay Area as well as other youth organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA. Within the Stanford community, we help to encourage students to meet and to get involved with Stanford professors in the Chemistry department. We hold research workshops, faculty lunches, and even put on shows during events such as Community Day.

If you are interested in joining or if you just want to find out more about the Alchemy Society, please email either Jian Cui or Sylvan Baca .

Professor Visiting from Harvard

Hi all,,
As I mentioned in a previous email, Gregory Verdine, a chemical biology professor at Harvard will be meeting with undergraduates on Thursday May 17th. Here's his research website:

Verdine Research Group

We're set up to meet at 10:30am on May 17th, in Keck 2S. It's nothing too formal, but if you'd like to chat with him please come by - I'll send out the location as soon as I know it. Also, if you're interested in coming, please email me so I can get an idea of how many people will be there.

Genentech Talk with Prof. Flygare

Hi everybody,
Here’s something that I think many of you will be interested in. Our good friend, John Flygare, who is a lecturer here and is also a researcher in industry, has agreed to come talk to us about working at his company, Genentech. A quick Wikipedia search will tell you that Genentech is one of the world’s leading (and probably the most famous) biotechnology companies and Fortune magazine listed it as #2 on its list of Best Companies to Work For (behind Google). You should know that Dr. Flygare is a recruiter for Genentech so if you are at all interested in Genentech or possibly entering the field of biotechnology or pharmaceuticals, whether it is for a summer internship or for a possible career, it would probably be worth your while to see him speak. I know that he has a few things prepared to say already, but I’m sure there will be plenty of time for you to ask him questions.
We will meet at NOON this Friday January 26 in the Chemistry Gazebo (between Stauffer I and Stauffer II, across from Mudd). As always, there will be food of some variety. Hope to see you there!

Science Demo with Prof. Flygare!

Hey everybody,
I hope everyone had a restful winter break! First thing this quarter – John Flygare, a lecturer in the department who teaches Chem 137, a medicinal organic chemistry class, has arranged for us to do a science demo at his kids’ elementary school on Wednesday, January 31, from 6:30 – 8:00pm. We will be having lunch with him THIS FRIDAY, January 19, at NOON in the Keck building, Conference room 3N (third floor conference room). There will be food and drinks!
If you are at all interested in participating in this demo, you should try to be there. We will discuss logistics as well as plan the experiments that we want to perform. I hope you can make it!

Faculty Lunch: Prof. Hans C. Andersen

Hey everyone,
We have set up a lunch with Professor Hans C. Andersen of the Chemistry Department this FRIDAY November 10 at NOON in Keck 2S (second floor, conference room south). Keck is the chemistry/chemical engineering building that is past Mudd and across from Lokey.
Professor Andersen was recently awarded the Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry. You can check out the news brief at Professor Hans Andersen wins the 2006-07 Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry . His research involves using molecular dynamics simulations and various other theoretical tools to study various systems such as supercooled liquids and glasses. So, very physical and very theoretical. This could be a good chance to find out about this type of research that I imagine many of us are not very familiar with. Be sure to check out his bio at Professor Hans C. Andersen .
If you are interested in having lunch with him, please email me back by THURSDAY AFTERNOON so that I know how much food to get. Also tell me if you have any food preferences. I’m currently leaning towards Chinese food... but I’m open to suggestions.
For those of you wondering what happened with Professor Vijay Pande, he is very busy these next couple of weeks and apologizes for not being able to have lunch with us. Since we would be nearing the end of the quarter if we wait for him, I suppose we can ask him next quarter.
So remember, Friday lunch with Prof. Anderson. Noon. Keck 2S. RSVP to me, gunqwee@stanford.edu.
Hope to see you there!
Jian
P. S. You get bonus points if you guess his middle name correctly.
