International business communication
Communicating with strangers can to some people be scaring and instead of trying they avoid it. But sometimes you can’t avoid it. When it comes to communicating in business related situations you can’t avoid it. If you are working with an international company, the chance that you are interacting with people from a different culture or country is relative big. The chance that the meeting will go smoothly is also big, but there is a small risk that there will be problem or culture relative difficulties. There are different ways to succeed in such situations and to overcome obstacles that can be in the way of a successful piece of business.
There are especially two ways to work with intercultural communication. The first one is preparations. If you, for example, are about to do business with India, it’s a good idea to do some research about the country. There are specific books about business related information. It is also good to get to know the culture a little better, for example, what is the religion in the country? What is the correct way to greet a person living in India? If you take some time and do your research well you can avoid a lot of misunderstandings and you don’t have to be afraid that you are insulting anyone.
Of course, by just reading books and do research, there is nearly impossible to learn everything about a country and its culture. But in combination with experience you have a good foundation to work with intercultural communication. Experience is what it sounds like, something you learn and gather while working. It is a great thing to observe other people whom working and communicating international. And don’t be afraid to ask, that is always better then don’t knowing. It should be a fun thing to work international and with the right preparation it is! So don’t be afraid, go out there and explore other countries and cultures!

Hello, Kristin.
I really enjoyed reading your post. I absolutely agree that it is very difficult to overcome yourself to communicate with people from other countries. Reading about other culture can do some good. Asking people who work internationally will also help. But to my mind there is also one problem while communicating to people from other countries. It is the character of a person. A person must always be tolerant to other people. If a person lacks of self-control it is almost impossible to get along not only with people from other countries but even with his or her fellow countrymen. What do you think about it?
Thanks a lot.

Hello, Kristin!
I appreciate your post and I completely agree with your point of view. In the field of International Business Communication, knowledge and experience play an important role. Communication is dynamic and brooks no delay, therefore International Communication does not remain permanent. In this regard, a person who cooperates with foreign companies should constantly keep abreast of the latest information to avoid misunderstanding in the process of interaction. However, this may not always contribute to successful communication. Sometimes even the most experienced and efficient person makes mistakes that cause misunderstanding of the opposite side of communication. For example, at the NATO summit, Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi shocked Angela Merkel who headed the German delegation by his strange behavior. Coming out of the car he continued to talk on the phone, made a hand gesture to make Angela Merkel not to draw attention to his person and welcome other guests. Angela Merkel was embarrassed, and after meting all, she left. But Berlusconi has continued to talk on the phone. After a thirty-minute conversation, he returned to the delegation. One more example, U.S. General James Cartwright during his meeting with Georgian President Mikhail made mistakes by saying “Tibl” instead Tbilisy and “Shashkashvili” instead Saakashvili. What do you think about ties incidents? Do you not think that successful International Business Communication is not only limited by experience and knowledge?

Hellow, Kristin!
I study global economy. So in the future I'm going to do international business. The South Korea and Australia are the countries of my dream. But I have never visited these them. and I agree with you that experience is the best way to get a complete knowledge about thei culture and especially business culture. Korea is an asian country, wher are so many specific rules and preferances. To anticipate them woul be really hard. Certainly reading books and doing researches con help to set up the business. However pure interaction forces you to make the foreign country out. Nowadays I work out to obtain my objectives in this case!!
Thank you for blog and good luck))

Hello,Kristin!
My name is Vita and I am a student of Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law.This semester we are studing business communication, that`s why it is very interesting to learn your attitude toward this aspect.
I absolutely agree with you that experience is the best way to learn everything about a country and culture.Besides, I also agree that it is very important to be aware of cultural features if you are going to make a business with its representatives.
But I think doing some research of another country is not enough. I mean, all people are different!even within one culture! So, you can not be sure if your business partner is a typical representative of his or her culture. As globalisation is developing, the differencies between cultures become not so pronounced, especially in business.

Salut, Kristin! I am a student of Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law.
I study global economy and my future profession will be connected with business communication.
All you have mentioned is absolutely right. But I want to add something connected with culture in general.
I am learning French and I consider this country to be very unique. But every year more and more people are immigrating to this country.I am not against the globalisation, but still I think that if you want to live in another culture, you should become a part of it: respect its traditions, values, history and,of course, you should live in accordance to them, so that all the countries do not have the same "face".
Learning more and more about another cultures you can look at yours from absolutely different point of view. Besides it helps you to be more tolerate since you are aware of the features and traditions of other countries.
Thank you for your blog. It is very big issue and I am glad that young people are concerned about it!

This is a very interesting topic and one I enjoyed reading about very much. I've seen more than one business owner lose an international deal because of a lack of cultural understanding.

Kristin,
Good read my friend, good read. I am into internet marketing via ecommerce and although this isn't the same, there are similar principles between the real work and the virtual web world. Keep up the good writing!

Kristin,
America is known as the melting pot for a reason, right? Even without an international company, the chances are you will deal with different cultures through just normal business in the US. Good article Kristin, thanks!

I think that being able to interact with people from other cultures is a privilege and should be something that is enjoyed rather than feared.
Research is good and it helps to learn some of the local customs but don't stress about it too much.
People are essentially the same wherever you go so just relax, smile and be yourself (pull out some photos of your children if you have them).

I know what you mean about overcoming obstacles, in fact that's why I've implemented a forum on my site to help others achieve their goals.
All the very best,

Inter cultural relation indeed tricky in a way. I agree with you kristin, that study in depth about sosio-culture background of one nation might do for start to establish a long term relation with other from different country and social ethnic. But respect also one keyword we all shouldnt forget. In the end, we all must learn on how to behave accordingly, based on whether or not it would trespassing other belief system and nature.

With the opening up of the world economy it has become particularly essential to communicate with people of different culture and community. Your post has very rightly stressed upon this point. Your suggestion are really helpful and can be instrumental in preparing a person before going into a deal with a stranger. thanks for sharing!

I've heard about and even witnessed companies collapsing over lack of cultural understanding. If you want to go international, then you need to do your research first.
This applies to online business' as well.

Having traveled to many Asian countries for business, I learned that you have to make sure you know the customs so that you do not offend your client.
For instance, in Thailand, you must never directly disagree with your client, but instead say that you 'have another opinion'

Many points raised in your blog and subsequent comments are spot on. In my experience each culture has its own nuances which are compounded by individual personalities. One resourceful way to handle these complexities is to seek out an ex-pat of the country you are seeking to do business with and spend time with them exploring their culture in the familiarity of your own environment where you are free to ask questions without appearing like a dunce.

I think the fear not wanting to communicate with others comes from people not being confident in themselves. They should relax more and enjoy communicating.

unfortunately society is made such a way that others think they need to be afraid.
You are right about preparation. The more you know how, the better and more relaxed you can and will be.
Research it.

I've worked with vendors from the states and overseas. I've had successes and failures with each.
Many forums that assist in creating the working relationships have you rate your experience in working with the other party and then these ratings become public.
How the person/company was rated by others has been the most accurate tool to predict how the business relationship will turn out, far more accurate than which country someone live in.
