Fantasy Sports
[This student blog entry is part of a Stanford PWR 2 assignment that is discussed at greater length here]
My research is about the influence of online fantasy sports on American society. A fantasy sport is a competition where participants build a team that competes against other individuals’ teams. The success of each team is based on the players that comprise each participant’s team. My research will be focused on how the world of online sports has truly infiltrated society. I will attempt to analyze how online sports are gradually overtaking the world of real-life sports, and what impact their permeating nature will truly have on our life, if any.
The world of online sports is huge—everyday millions of Americans who have normal lives engage in these online competitions. One recent poll said that 34 million people have at one time participated in fantasy sports. The question that I need to address, however, is how does this really affect our culture?
I recently read an article, titled “In Fantasy Sports, It Helps Being a Rocket Scientist”, which covers a man named Clark Olson who is rocket scientist by profession, but whose passion is fantasy football. This is an important article for my argument because it suggests a few things about fantasy sports. First of all, it legitimizes the culture of the fantasy world. It does this because it suggests that people from all different backgrounds may compete in fantasy sports, but they are all interconnected by their passion for the competition. Thus, it is evident that a true culture—one which transcends others—has arisen. Secondly, by using a rocket scientist as an example of an avid enthusiast who has excelled in the online sports world, this article does a service to my cause by suggesting that the world of online sports is legitimate. Who is more qualified than a rocket scientist? Now it is apparent that online sports are merely for the unskilled or unintelligent—they are popular even in the academic and professional worlds.

I myself play fantasy and I know how much the range of participants varies. You have those that just join because they are bored, those that place wages and play amongst freinds, and then there are those that take a very in depth approach and play for a large sum of many. There are fantasy analyst on the web and on tv, and even groups that work on research for ridiculous things such as which football kicker will perform the best on week 11 of the football season. I like how you are comparing both those that don't care and those that are obsessed, those that may be considered "unskilled" and those that are professionals. Good luck comparing the influences the fantasy world has on the real world when it comes to sports...should be fun.

Harry--This is a really interesting topic to investigate especially as technology continues to develop. I think that you have definitely found sources that, as you said, legitimize fantasy sports. What kind of stand are you going to take on the effect of fantasy sports on our culture? You could definitely go in many directions. For example, you could take a stand that people will no longer feel the need to watch sports for entertainment because they can have their own team. On that same note, you could argue that most people who play fantasy sports are sports addicts themselves and will therefore always be interested in seeing a real sports game. I will be interested to see where your research takes you and look forward to hearing your presentation. Good luck!

I find it really interesting that fantasy sports can have as much of an audience as real sports; it seems to say a lot about the power of technology and specifically the Internet. It would be interesting to understand what it is about fantasy sports that makes it appealing or even more appealing than real sports. Are you thinking of doing interviews for your primary research? That may give you some insight as to why fantasy sports has become the phenomenon it is and what makes it better and/or worse than real sports. Hope that helps! Your research sounds really interesting; looking forward to hearing more!

I am personally not a lover of sports (or fantasy sports) but I am curious to see what you come up with. I second Kavi's question/ suggestion about figuring out why so many people find fantasy sports intruiging. The other things that caught my attention was when you said "by using a rocket scientist as an example of an avid enthusiast who has excelled in the online sports world, this article does a service to my cause by suggesting that the world of online sports is legitimate. Who is more qualified than a rocket scientist?." I feel as though that is a statement that might need a little bit more explanation. However I do understand that this is a short blog post so you can't say everything. Good luck with the rest of your research!

Although I myself have never played any fantasy sports, I'm constantly surprised with the amount of people who do. Everyone from my dad and brother to my best friend is online playing fantasy sports. I've known a few people who get VERY serious about it. I've never really understood it but it makes plain sense to them. I like the piece of evidence you mentioned, that even rocket scientists are participating. It would be interesting if you further explored the range of players with some interviews.

Harry,
It's fun to read all the comments on your post to see how people have connected with your topic on so many different levels -- even those people who aren't really sports fans.
I have to say, though, that I'm a little unsure about your statement about the rocket scientists -- why should rocket scientists know anything about sports? But I guess what you're getting at is that it raises the ethos or the profile of sports enthusiasts in general, showing, as you mention, that it's not only people with time to kill who are using fantasy sites.
That sounds like an interesting article -- where did you find it? Is it an online piece or from a published news magazine, like SI or Time? You have such a contemporary topic, I would assume that you're finding your materials using many non-academic sources (which is okay for a project of this sort, as long as you have a strong intellectual frame for and rigor to your discussion).
Keep up the good work!

An interesting concept.
Building a team for Darts, inclusion of John Lowe, Phil Taylor and many others would be a truly great team.
Its not a concept that I have really considered but having read your blog, I will certainly do so.
Many thanks for putting the thought into my mind.
