prayer books and rice bowls to aid the hungry around the world. Look for
us after Mass this Sunday. Contact Estella (cestella@stanford.edu) if you
need more.
UNDERGRAD DINNER
Yea, we know we're serving dinner while the Super Bowl winds down. We
figure that not everyone is from New York & New England, but we know
everyone loves gourmet Macaroni & Cheese paired with sumptuous
Chicken. So, come out and share a meal with us this Sunday at 5:45 PM, Old
Union, 3rd floor.
FAT TUESDAY BOWLING
Lent comes early this year, and that means Fat Tuesday is this week! To
kick off the Lenten season, join us for some late night Palo Alto

campus by midnight. $5 to play. Spots limited. Contact Andrew
(abarba@stanford.edu) to RSVP.
FRANCIS COLLINS TALK: "GOD AND THE GENOME"
CCAS is
co-sponsoring a talk by Francis Collins on Tuesday, February 5, at 7:30PM
in Memorial Auditorium. One of the world's leading geneticists, Collins
will speak about his search for answers to the great questions of human
existence and the surprising harmony he has found between science and
faith in God (more
info...). Collins's book The Language of God is on sale for $5,
after mass and in the intern office. Contact Andrew (abarba@stanford.edu)
to purchase.
LENTEN REGULATIONS
Lent 2008: Ash Wednesday is February 6. This day marks our entry into the
holy season of Lent. There will be Masses at 8:00 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and
8:00 p.m. There is also an ecumenical service at noon. All services are in
Memorial Church.
- Two elements especially characteristic of Lent should be emphasized: the
recalling of Baptism, or preparation for it, and Penance. In this way,
the Church prepares the faithful to celebrate the Paschal Mystery and
the feast of the Resurrection.
- The elements of penance--conversion--are not only the social consequences
of sin but also the detestation of sin as an offense against God. During
Lent penance should not only be internal but also external and
social. Prayer for conversion and reconciliation in and with the Church
should be encouraged.
- Abstinence
Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday
and all Fridays during Lent. All persons are bound by the law of the
Church to abstain from the day after their 14th birthday.
- Fasting
The Church's law of fast binds on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. The law of fasting obliges from the day after one's 18th
birthday until the day after one's 59th birthday.
Fasting means that one full meatless meal per day may be eaten. Two other
meatless meals may be taken sufficient to maintain strength, but
together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and
fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work
are affected, fasting does not oblige. Private, self-imposed observance
of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended. Pastors and
parents are to see to it that children who are not bound by the laws of
fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance,
conversion, and reconciliation.
- Lenten Observance
As is traditional, increased opportunity to participate
in the Eucharistic Liturgy, and in the Sacrament of Penance and
Reconciliation, should be provided. Other devotions, such as the
Stations of the Cross, vigils, and prayer services (with Benediction of
the Blessed Sacrament if opportune), are encouraged. The traditional
private practices of increased prayer, Scripture reading, Stations of
the Cross, spiritual reading, alms, personal self-denial in food and
drink, and increased care and service to the sick and needy are suggested.
- Easter Duty Holy Communion
All the faithful, after they
have been initiated into the most holy Eucharist, are bound by the
obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must
be fulfilled during the Easter Season unless it is fulfilled for a just
cause at some time during the year. In the United States of America the
Easter Season is considered as the period from the first Sunday of Lent
until Trinity Sunday.
- Sacrament of Penance
A member of the Christian faithful is obliged to confess in kind and in
number all serious sins committed after Baptism and not yet directly
remitted through the keys of the Church or acknowledged in individual
confession, of which one is conscious after diligent examination of
conscience. It is recommended to the Christian faithful that venial
sins also be confessed. After having attained the age of discretion
each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess
serious sins at least once a year.
MASS IN SPANISH
Our monthly Mass in Spanish will be held next Sunday, Feb. 10, at 3:00
p.m. in the side chapel of Memorial Church. Our presider will be Fr. Matt
Carnes. All are welcome to attend.
GRAD/POST DOC DINNER
Dinner is next Sunday, February 10 at 6 PM. Enjoy gourmet cooking by your
very own classmates and the interns promise to show up this time! Dinner
is served at our Annex, 1565 Stanford Avenue. Contact Estella
(cestella@stanford.edu) for directions.
GRAD/POST DOC RETREAT
This year's retreat takes place February 22-24 in Lafayette, CA. Themed
"God's universe and your place in it: A Catholic Christian cosmology",
Fr. Nathan will tackle the big questions in life from the Catholic
perspective. Cost is $40, scholarships available. Contact Andrew
(abarba@stanford.edu) for details and sign-up.
DISCUSSION SERIES WITH FR. NATHAN
During Winter quarter, Father Nathan will be holding a weekly discussion
series on various religious topics, beginning with a three-part series
entitled "I Am With You: God's Message in Matthew." At Masses through most
of 2008 we'll be hearing the Gospel of Matthew. Why not take part in an
overview study that will enrich your experience at Sunday Mass all year
long? Meet on Wednesday evening, in the conference room on the third floor
of Old Union, from 7:30 until 9:00pm. Please bring a Bible!
ACCOMPANISTS NEEDED
The music ministry is in real need of piano accompanists. We have been
blessed to have wonderful players, but several have now graduated and we
need 2 or 3 others to come in and play. You don't need to be here every
week. Training is provided. Contact Teresa Pleins, Director of Liturgy and
Music (tpleins@stanford.edu) if you can help.
