Calypso is a style of Afro-Carribean music that is a blend of African, Spanish, Britich, and French Troubadour musical styles. It is an especially integral part of the musical heritage of Trinidad, where it has evolved into a way of spreading news through calypsonians who used their lyrics as a vehicle for free speech and news. Cardinal Calypso is Stanford University's new campus steel pan ensemble. We are a student group founded in 2005 though a Pierce Award grant from the Stanford Alumni Association (2004 Pierce Award, "The 'Pan' American Project."). Our goal is to educate the university community on Carribean music and culture through workshops and performances.
