ABSTRACT
The lack of coordination between our nation's K-12 and higher education systems serves as a major stumbling block for students making this transition. Lack of communication and coordination between the two systems sends vague, confusing, and often mixed signals regarding what is needed for university admission and freshman course placement. As a result, many students are inadequately prepared for the required level of university work and may need to enroll in remedial-level courses once in college, may choose less-selective institutions, or may even choose not to attend college at all. In this paper, the author, a leading advocate of K-16 reform, pinpoints and analyzes many of the disconnects in policies and practices between the two levels, and outlines a number of recommendations for change.
