Mailing List Top

If you’re going to be playing with us regularly (and we hope you are!) we strongly encourage you to join our mailing list.  This is a low traffic list, probably no more than 2-3 emails a month, only to be used for major club news and schedule changes.  You can stay also up to date about information for that game and general bridge goings-on at Stanford by visiting the general Stanford Bridge Club site or joining the general Bridge Club mailing list.

Please use email for all club-relevant communication up to within an hour of game time (including partnership requests) and only use the phone number just before game time.  I cannot guarantee partners under any circumstances but will have a much better chance of finding you a partner if you contact me at least 24 hours before game time.

Location Information Top

New 2008-2009 Location: Meyer Library

560 Escondido Mall, Stanford CA

We are very excited about this new location, which is well lit, at a central campus location, and should provide a consistent venue for our Thursday night game.

Games will generally be held in the Forum Room.

Meyer Library itself is circled in red above.  Parking is available on Escondido Road or in any of the lots circled above.

Remember: NEVER park in a space marked “RF.”  Spaces marked “EA,” “ES,” “A” or “C” are fine to park at.

Directions:

From 101 or Palo Alto, take Embarcadero West onto Stanford Campus.  Make a left at Campus Drive; follow Campus Drive as it bends to the right and make a right turn at Escondido Road.  Park as shown above; Meyer Library is the large building straight ahead past the end of Escondido Road (on Escondido mall).

From 280, exit onto Alpine Road toward Palo Alto.  Make a right a Junipero Serra Boulevard; make a left at Campus Drive. Follow Campus Drive as it bends to the left and make a left turn at Escondido Road.  Park as shown above; Meyer Library is the large building straight ahead past the end of Escondido Road (on Escondido mall).

Parking:  The nearest parking lots to Meyer Library technically require a “EA” or “ES” residential parking permit at all times.  However, permit requirements are not generally enforced in the evening.  We do not think you will get a ticket; however, we are not responsible for citations for parking without a permit.  There are many lots within 5-10 minutes walking distance that are truly free in the evening (any space which requires an A or C permit is free in the evenings).  A complete parking map is available here; see also information about buses below.  Under no circumstances should you park in a space marked “RF”; these spaces are reserved for individuals and you will in all likelihood get a ticket or be towed.

Handicap Access:  If you are concerned about handicap access to our game, please contact us in advance and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate you.

Marguerite Buses:  If you would prefer to use mass transit, the Marguerite, Stanford’s free bus services, runs are available.  The A, B, M, and SE lines all serve the corner of Escondido Road and Campus Drive; Meyer Library is a 5-10 minute walk from this intersection.  Advance planning is advised to ensure the bus you intend to take runs when you intend to take it!  A complete bus route map is here and schedules are here.

Food and Drink:  The Cardinal DBC will have ample snack food available for free at the play site.  Meyer Library is located right next to Moonbeans, a popular campus coffee outfit, serving the usual coffee-related beverages.

Preduplicated Hands:  The Cardinal DBC is proud to offer preduplicated boards with hand records for all pair games.  This means you don’t have to shuffle and will be able to see all the hands with “double dummy” analysis after the session.  Paper hand records will be available; hand records will also appear on the web.  Preduplicated hands are not rigged, we promise!  (If you need more convincing of this, read this.  Most of the things the ACBL does as described in this article go for our club too.)

Free Plays for 70% Games:  The Cardinal DBC will reward truly exceptional sessions with free plays for any pair scoring above 70% in any standard pair game (this does not apply to team games or other unusual format games).  For Stanford students (who play for free anyway), a 70+% game will be rewarded with a bridge book of their choice from the club library.

Frequent Special Games:  The Cardinal DBC is committed to supporting ACBL programs, with particular emphasis on supporting the ACBL Junior Fund and ACBL Educational Foundation.  If this means extra masterpoints for you, that’s great too! J  Currently, we intend to run special extra masterpoint games on the first and third Thursday of each month.  In addition, the third Thursday of each month will be in a special format, such as Swiss, Board-a-Match, or Individual games.  Check the calendar for details.

Newcomer Strats and Flights:  The Cardinal DBC will run a separate 49er flight whenever overall attendance warrants (i.e., if there are enough tables in the manager’s discretion to run a decent game in both flights).  When the game is a combined game, stratifications will cater heavily to newcomers (20/100/open or something similar; strats will vary based on attendance).

Be Nice or Else!:  We hope that the Cardinal DBC will be a fun, friendly environment where new and old players alike feel welcome.  Because we anticipate being among the first duplicate bridge experiences for many Stanford students and other community members, we take behavioral issues very seriously (which is ACBL policy anyhow!).  Bad behavior will be dealt with on a case by case basis, but being mean or rude at the Cardinal DBC is sufficient cause for an individual to be suspended or banned from the club.

More about us:  The Cardinal DBC is a not-for-profit undertaking of The Stanford Bridge Club (a voluntary student organization at Stanford).  We’re hoping to provide a great place to introduce Stanford students and others to duplicate bridge and provide a fun, upbeat environment for all our players.  Because we’re operating on a college campus, there are a few things we have to be a little more flexible about than at a full time club, like using more portable equipment, dealing with the occasional location change, and so on.  But, we think the opportunity to play with newer players in a fun, different environment and support bridge at Stanford and among younger players in general is well worth it, and we hope you will too!

The Cardinal DBC is made possible by generous support from the Associated Students of Stanford University, Stanford Graduate Student Council, and Palo Alto Unit 503 of the American Contract Bridge League.
