In praise of books

March 29th, 2007

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry --
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll --
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human soul.
 Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Check out an environmental classic, like “Cadillac Desert” (Marc Reisner, rev. ed. 1993). Learn how the desert bloomed and the “American Serengeti” (San Joaquin Valley) became a bastion of industrial agriculture.
