Audio-visual stimulation (AVS) has been around ever since primitive humans danced to drumming as a flickering fire was reflected off the cave walls. Today’s users include hordes of Korean students and alternative medicine advocates, as well as many mental health practitioners including neurotherapy clinicians. Research results with AVS are accumulating at an accelerating rate as evoked response, brainmapping and QEEG techniques allow the fine discrimination of brain responses to stimuli. Many features of AVS have not been thoroughly explored, such as hemifield stimulation, LED color, flash frequency, waveshape, and intensity, not to mention characteristics of the user. This presentation will include a description of several completed AVS studies: academic performance enhancement and cognitive enhancement in seniors. Additionally, preliminary research with hemifield stimulation will be discussed. Finally, a survey of clinical applications will be offered along with specifics of AVS augmentation with neurofeedback at the author’s clinic. |
