During a patent search, a combination of keywords is important. The method
of combining keywords is left to the discretion of the searcher. However,
we recommend the following:
- Identify your keywords and their categories prior to the patent search
- Make sure to use “abstract/generic” keywords at the beginning of the search
- Combine keywords from different categories (generic+specific, generic+specialized, etc.)
- Keep track of prior searches and keyword combinations to avoid redundancies
- Be persistent: don't give up searching, even if the primary search reveals no hits!
