Provide FEEDBACK

This CD-based course, developed for the use of past and present students of Immunology 230 (Introduction to Medicine), is meant to teach the essential elements of medical technology entrepreneurship through six lessons compiled from respected leaders in the field. Each 40-minute lesson covers a distinct stage in the process, from assessing the viability and marketability of a medical need to the basics of financial modeling and business plan creation. Supplemental materials provided with each lesson provide a unified real-world example incorporating the concepts taught in that lesson.

Course Objectives

While this course was developed with Immunology 230 students in mind, anyone with an idea for a new medical technology could benefit from its content. Through this course, an individual with such an idea should be able to

  • Identify the true clinical need that their technology addresses and determine the viability of that need compared with other potential solutions
  • Validate the novelty and patentability of their concept
  • Choose an appropriate business model and development strategy for potential commercialization
  • Determine the appropriate funding sources for their project and develop a presentation appropriate to that audience
  • Establish the regulatory and reimbursement approvals required prior to clinical adoptability
  • Develop a financial model and business plan to cover the development of the concept to commercialization

System Requirements

To properly view the content on this CD, the following is required:

MED 272 Information

The lecture materials for this course were drawn from lectures given in Medicine 272 (Biodesign Innovation), a two-quarter series providing students with skills essential for the development of new biomedical technologies. This project-based course challenges students to take the critical first steps in invention, patenting, early prototyping and development of new concepts. Students looking for additional instruction in medical entrepreneurship after taking this course on CD are encouraged to apply for enrollment in Medicine 272.
