Joshua Makower, MD is a Consulting Associate Professor
of Medicine at Stanford University Medical School and Director of
Stanford's Biodesign Innovation Program. He is also the founder,
chairman and chief technical officer of TransVascular, Inc., a development
stage, venture backed start-up company focused on the development
of a completely catheter-based coronary bypass technology. Dr. Makower
also remains founder and president of Exploramed, Inc., the medical
device incubator responsible for the creation of TransVascular,
Inc. and EndoMatrix, Inc., a company focused on the development
of a novel therapy for incontinence and GI REflux, which was acquired
by C.R Bard in 1997. Prior to that, Dr. Makower was Founder and
Manager of Pfizer's Strategic Innovation Group, a group chartered
to create new medical device technologies for Pfizer's medical device
businesses. Dr. Makower was responsible for a string of new product
development programs at Pfizer and holds over a dozen patents for
various medical devices in the fields of cardiology, general surgery
and urology. Dr. Makower's role at Pfizer included management, business
development, technology assessment and research and development.
Dr. Makower holds a Master of Business Administration degree from
Columbia University, a Doctor of Medicine degree from the New York
University School of Medicine, and a Bachelor of Science degree
in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institue of Technology.
Dr. Makower also serves on the Board of Directors for Iridex Medical,
Inc. - a public company developing laser therapies for opthalmologic
diseases - Intrinsic Orthopedics Inc. - a venture backed private
company developing innovative spinal therapies.
