Robert D. Buyan is a practicing attorney specializing
in intellectual property law, including the preparation and prosecution
of patent applications, rendering of legal opinions, strategic counseling
of clients in relation to intellectual property matters, representing
clients in inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and
Appeal Board and litigating intellectual property disputes in state
and federal courts. Rob's primary areas of expertise include the
preparation, prosecution and litigation of patent matters that relate
to biomedical devices, medical & surgical methods, pharmaceuticals,
chemicals and biologicals. His client list includes the Regents
of the University of California, large publicly traded corporations,
privately held companies, start ups, venture capital firms and a
few individual inventors. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science
degree in Biology from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania,
Rob completed post-baccalaureate work in the fields of chemistry,
pharmacology and biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh and
the Ohio State University. He subsequently obtained his Juris Doctorate
from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, where he served
as a staff member of the Capital University Law Review. Rob is currently
a partner in the law firm of Stout, Uxa, Buyan & Mullins in
Irvine, California. Prior to the formation of Stout, Uxa, Buyan
& Mullins, Rob had been engaged in the private practice of law
since 1985, and had been a named partner in two other southern California
intellectual property firms. He is rated A-V (highest rating possible)
by the Martindale-Hubbell law directory. Before embarking on his
career in patent law, Rob held research positions with two major
corporations and one university-related teaching hospital. He authored
various papers in the field of pharmacology.
