This Thursday, the BGSA will be having a mixer for those interested in learning more about serving on the BGSA Exec Board. The current officers will be present and you will have an opportunity to ask questions in an informal setting. The mixer will be at Compadres Bar and Grill, 3877 El Camino Real Palo Alto, CA 94306. We will be there from 6:30 til about 8pm. BGSA will sponsor appetizers and drinks; so get there on time to be sure to get food. Please reply to me if you will be able to make it out.

Our guest is Dr. Reginald E. Mitchell, a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Dr. Mitchell's primary area of research is concerned with characterizing the physical and chemical processes that occur during the combustion and gasification of pulverized coal and biomass. You don't have to be a scientist or engineer to attend this event.

Together with Stanford NAACP, BGSA will kick off Black Liberation Month in an evening with renowned scholar Clay Carson (Martin Luther King Papers Project) and visiting scholar Clarence Jones, former legal counsel to Dr. King and one of the first black men on Wall Street.
Join us as Dr. Carson and Mr. Jones take a 40 year retrospective on the national and historical significance of the 1968 "Take Back the Mic" student protest and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Come out and learn not only what the two events represented for black political action, but also how black leadership and action have changed over the last 40 years. Dinner will be served.

We'll be hearing from representatives of several community organizations who will talk about the services their groups provide, the role of Black volunteerism in their work and what it all means for us as members of the community. Also, this is your first chance to reserve spots for Black Ice Weekend 2008!!!!! You MUST be present at the meeting to reserve your spot or send a proxy. Spots are reserved through payment of a deposit or the full amount of the trip.

Project Open Hand

BGSA is taking a group of volunteers up to San Francisco to work with Project Open Hand (www.openhand.org) – a local organization that’s provided meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for seniors and meal service for homebound and critically ill seniors for over 20 years.
We’ll head out from Stanford at about 8:00 (yes, AM) and return around 1:15. Give a little back and do something great with your Saturday!!!

This month, in light of Jena 6 and other incidents of campus racism across the country, we'll discuss how issues of race and racism impact us as graduate students here at Stanford and how we can take positive and empowering action. The Black Ice ski trip, community service opportunities and BGSA t-shirt design contest will also be discussed. As well, please remember to bring dues ($30).

Black graduate alumni and current Stanford faculty member Dr. Arnetha Ball will discuss her path through Stanford and how she arrived at her current position. After her talk, there will be dedicated time for networking with other graduate alumni attending the dinner.
