The friendship between Franz Marc and Lasker-Schüler started
in 1912, on the front page of "Der Sturm." Marc's illustration
of her poem "Versöhnung"
- a woodcut depicting a hovering human figure, its body slightly
recoiled, as if in pain - seems to have been to the poet's liking.
On November 9th She introduced herself:
Wertester Mahler,
Wenn ich nach München komme, (Ich bin Jussuf der Prinz von
Theben) soll ich Franz Marc besuchen? Die blauen Reiter schenken
mir dann eine Stunde und ich bringen Ihnen bunte Steine mit. Ich
habe viele Gedichte gedichtet, auch die Versöhnung - warum
haben Sie die Versöhnung gezeichnet - sind sie auch so schmerzlich
verloren wie ich, dass ich keinen Weg mehr habe nur Schluchten.
Esteemed Painter,
When I come to Munich, (I am Jussuf the Prince of Thebes)
should I visit Franz Marc? The blue rider will then give
me a moment and I will bring you colorful stones. I have
writen many poems, among them Versöhnung - Why did
you illustrate Versöhnung - are you also painfully
lost as I am, that I have no road anymore, only ravines.
This letter was shortly followed by a disclaimer, on November 14th:
Ich weiss von nichts! Bitte senden Sie mir den Brief der meine
Unterschrift trägt. Eine üble Person hat schon zweimal
hinter meinem Rücken sich erlaubt Briefe zu schrieben mit
meiner Namenunterschrift und genauer Handschrift.
I know nothing! Please send me the letter which bears my signature.
An evil person has allowed himself to write letters with my signature
and my exact handwriting twice already behind my back.
A final explanation was appended on a separate note that same day:
Blauer Reiter,
Ich bin aus Galiläa, ging dann nach Bagdad, kam dann nach
Theben. So erklärt sich alles. Grüss dein Gemahl.

I am from the Galilee, I then went to Baghdad, and then came to
Thebes. Thus everything is explained.
