Programs
Achieve
Achieve in Palo Alto is a school for developmentally challenged students, many of whom are autistic, of all ages. ARTSPAN will fulfill the school's need for an art program, running once a week, year-round. Each lesson is approximately an hour, with the focus here leaning towards art therapy and communication through art. ARTSPAN will teach all the grades based on a rotation schedule with the help of Achieve staff, who supervise the children. Volunteers are fingerprinted at the Stanford Police Station and receive training from Achieve. Transportation to the program location provided for volunteers.
Boy's and Girl's Club
The Boy's and Girls' Club in Redwood City serves many underprivileged "latch-key" kids. This is an after-school program that runs once a week year-round. Lessons will last approximately two hours, and for the most part, focus on the visual arts and arts-and-crafts. Transportation to the program location is provided for volunteers.
Rosalie Rendu Center
An after-school program in a community center in East Palo Alto. ARTSPAN will be providing art lessons for elementary school-age children. This program runs once a week year-round, with each lessons being approximately two hours. Transportation to the program location provided for volunteers.
Our Students
Our students are primarily those overlooked by mainstream society (underprivileged and/or developmentally challenged) or those in need of financial aid. However, we will not turn away any interested student.
Our art classes offer a broad visual arts experience that also incorporates
art history, multicultural education, and performing arts in the lessons
and projects. We teach activities ranging from painting, sculpture,
and photography to Halloween paper masks, bead necklaces, and Popsicle
stick houses. ARTSPAN instruction will in no way conflict with the children's
schoolwork, as all artwork will be done during class.
Each
week, ARTSPAN focuses on an activity, such as "Nature Drawing Workshops"
to "Clay Work." Holiday projects will also be planned at the
appropriate times.
