Natural Stone Mosaic
This stone mosaic depicts Sandino and the horsemen of his "Small Crazy Army," as his followers were called. In the bakground, women are washing their clothes in the river. By Leonel Cerrato.
The Cerrato brothers (Leonel, Nohelia, Vicente) began experimenting with the natural stone mosaic technique in 1995. This year marked the preliminary investigation into this artistic media at Nicaragua's National School of Public-Monumental Art.

Today, the Cerratos draw from more than fifty natural colors, many of which are brought from different locations in Nicaragua and are noted for their exemplary beauty. These pigments physical and chemical composition also resist elements of weather that decay other common outdoor or indoor mural techniques.

The Cerrato family currently finished a 8 x 5 m. mosaic consisting of 32 panels. The subject matter, the "Small Crazy Army" of General Sandino, was based on a sketch by Leonel Cerrato.
